Leaving your car when you go on det... will it be OK?

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I bought a cover for my motor a few years ago for when I went on dets, threw it over the car, and tucked it under the hub caps to stop it blowing away.

Came back a few months later to find hub caps laid next to the wheels, and cover nowhere to be seen. :PDT_Xtremez_25:

There was a bit of a hoo haah at Coningsby aroud 4 years ago about cars being left on base.
SWO wanted them taxed and insured, and proof of them put in the window, otherwise they'll be towed.
Bit of an arse, especially if you're tax ran out whilst you were away, but you still had a while left on the disc before you went!

You might wanna change the oil if its old, better having it sat there in clean oil as opposed to old stuff with all the corrosive contaminates.
I would leave the keys with a GOOD mate, get him to turn the engine and a short drive around the car park every so often. Hand brake is a goodie!
As someone else said a full tank is a good idea as it will help prevent water in the fuel tank... from condensation.

Insurance is up to you, if its a new fancy car then 3rd party, F&T, if its an old banger I would cancel, but you have to consider the worst. Road tax is a defo... no point paying for it if its not on the road.

Over inflating the tyres I think is unnessecary, either get your mate to check once a month or so or just take it straight to the garage when you get back.
I would think about washing it before you go, its winter and the roads will have been gritted, you could come back to a rusty surprise!

Cant think of much else... Have a good time!

Defo leave te brakes off and in gear, didn't do that on my wreck when on a five month OOA (half way though a tour at Al's garage when Telic kicked off) and found the brakes had locked on solid when I got back (good thing I was in the RAC). Yes get your mate to run the engine over, however last time I saw some one do it, I saw two things happen.

1. His mate(s) drove it around the site, thrashing the guts out of it.

2. His Girlfriend (who couldn't drive) started the engine up after his mate(s) had parked it up in gear with the handbrake off. Car ended up imbedded in an earth bank the other side of the road from where it was parked.
