LS&GC Medal Changes

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
So the IBN was released today stating that all Officers will now be able to earn the LS&GCM and not just those who have commissioned from the ranks. Do the Goaters think that this is a change that should have been made years ago or should it remain a medal for only non-commissioned personnel?

Due to their employment a lot of officers never deploy so the only chance to get a medal is the royal anniversaries, this will give them something to put next to their MBE.

AS long as they have to fulfill the same criteria, 15 years service unblemished then fine. im out now so don't know the details. do they have to 15 ? if not then its wrong IMHO.

The fact some deploy makes no difference some junior ranks never deploy. smacks to me of boo hoo why cant i have one of those.

15 years.

The qualifying criteria has been set as the exact same as it was previously, 15 years un-detected and then a further 10 for your clasp.

Was still 15, be interested to see how they work this as I've done 27 years. Do I automatically get the new clasp or have to hang onto 30?

Just read the JSP and I get my clasp early! So if you've done 35 years and have a clasp you can claim the second with only 5 years qualification as an officer could as well (15+10+10). Going to take a while to roll all this out though.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind not giving officers it in the past?

Suppose if you spot an older officer without one now, you know he's massively messed up at some point. Harder to hold respect perhaps?!

That's a good point.

Is the playing field level enough to award them a gong for good behaviour? Although a rare event these days the military system of punishment is geared towards punishing non-commissioned ranks with penal, financial or restrictive penalties. If a commissioned rank fecks up its generally a chat with or without biscuits and a LFE type tap on the wrist like 'write me up a report on what you have learned from this would you Tristan?'

One avenue is easily and readily placed on the persons record, the other is talked about a lot and after doing the mail run and dissemination in the mess for a week forgotten about on the whole.

I'm not so sure this isn't a thinly veiled push to increase medal width on number 1's so they don't look quite so bad when parading with Non-comms with a chest-full these days...

Those with a disciplinary entry in their records can no longer be denied the award either, so, so long as you have 15 years undetected crime, you can apply to get the medal.

Once worked with an old Sqn Ldr (ex Chiefy) that had a Long Gone Gong with Bar.

He was a good old boy.

The IBN is saying that there is still a list of offences that are a permanent ban for your LS&GC.

I've always heard that the reasoning behind not issuing it to officers was they where always expected to hold themselves to a higher standard.

Yet the JSP makes no mention of it:

Previous Permanent Ineligibility. Other Ranks who had previously had the award delayed or been permanently denied qualifying for the award of the LS&GCM under the previous regulations because of a serious offence on their record may apply for the award provided they were serving in the Regular Forces on 1 October 2016 and had completed a period of 15 years in the Regular Forces from the date of the last offence. Applications from serving individuals are to be made through Commanding Officers. Applications from veterans are to be made through the MOD Medal Office.

When you get your shiney new medal or bar I can highly recommend Military Medal Mounting if you need them mounting or a miniature for your messdress.

Not seen the paperwork yet but was awarded my LSGC (Commissioned at 15 yrs). Does that mean now that having done 26 yrs I can get a clasp or as it was the old LSGC am I going to miss out?

you get fcuk all, as you are a crap nurse that failed to spot a seriously ill man standing in front of you, who hours later was rushed into Hospital for an emergency operation. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Qualifying criteria was always 15 + 15 for the clasp. Must be a typo if they say a clasp at 25..
