Can anybody kindly point me to the reference which states whether the 15 years service for the LS&GC medal starts at 16 or 18....if that makes sense..ta muchly.

Wasn't it something to do with being able to go to Ireland in the bad old days. I remember as the old style increments were timed from it as well.

Isn't there a copy of the Letter Patent (is that what they're called?) for the award of the LS&GCM included as an appendix to QR's?

The long gong does actually come automatically, once again the rules changed as people actually notice you after 15 years.

You mean it's changed back again? When did that happen?

More importantly - what about those of us who were told to re-apply after a couple of years because of a, erm, 'colourful' youth?

I was told at my 15 year point that I wasn't getting it because of my "history" but got it presented about 3 years later...........never had to apply for it then (5-6 years ago).

Crack on.................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Pre-JPA that was always the case - for us anyway, I think the Army was different but then their long gongs are issued on a piece of elastic. Following the introduction of JPA, the Medals Office no longer received automatic notification when someone reached their 15 year point, so the process changed and it became incumbent on the individuals to apply for the medal.

I've just got off the phone to P1 and it seems that someone has recently had a fit of common sense so if you reach your 15 year point without incident then you don't need to do anything. The medal will turn up in due course and it will be presented with all due ceremony, etc., etc. If, however, you made full use of being young and foolish, then you will need to complete the application form 15 years after the last time you were caught and an independent board will determine whether the award of the medal is deserved.

TBJ, that's exactly what happened in my case. I got mine after 20 years service (it took me 5 years to work out how to not get caught).

A bit obvious you've been a naughty boy at the presentation when the citation gives the date you joined (a bit of maths and the sniggers start).

thats a laugh! - I had mine chucked at me by OC PSF at Staxton when he "remembered" it was in his drawer - I was getting my clearance chit signed at the time - made me feel really "speshul"...

Appologies for dragging up an old thread, but....

Does anyone have an idea how long after your 15 yr point the LS&GC medals are currently dropping into OC P1s mail tray?
