One of our lads in due OOA soon and has been told he needs a Matt and Noddy tractor on his F600 before he goes. This is obviously a 'pet' name for the vehicle in question and nobody here has heard it used before - not too many tractors at Tossford , what type of tractor is this please?

this is the new Matt tractor we use. The noddy tractors are the old movers baggage tractors if that helps any.

MATT, Medium Aircraft Towing Tractor - yellow in colour made by schopf. The tractor of choice at most units now. The Noddy is a warehouse tractor and is often used for towing GSE. Hope this helps....

Yep that helps a lot. We kind of figured the Noddy tractor was the little baggage towing job, the MATT however was a new one. Cheers for the help.

Bloody useless for getting a full towing team across the airfield, or any distance for that matter, as you are only allowed to have 2 persons in the cab (driver + 1) - although we generally squeeze 4 into it. And don't even think about anyone sitting on the back as it throws MT into a total rage!!

I much preferred these:

Ah, can't beat the old Hallam. Last one I drove was in Basrah, that poor old bird was probably left there to rot when we left. I've never understood why a tractor like the MATT was designed with only 2 bods in mind, far too civvy orientated I suppose.

Awesome bits of kit!!

Especially when flying down the Cob,at full speed ( the Hare was set to max) at a secrety test airfield in Wiltshire. I thought I was gonna die when one of the lads bombed it through a dip in the tarmac and bounced from wheel to wheel for five very, very long seconds.

And so did the rest of the passengers who were crammed in.............and the sooties, who thought we were about to smash into an "unconvieniently" parked Harrier!:raf:

Oh and your example............... No Flashing amber lights and no towing triangle equals masive fail. !!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Arrrrr or how about the driver unit for a Kipper Fleet Riggers Crew Bus?
One of these, a bomb trolley and a few pax seats loosely lying on the bed of the bomb trolley would guarantee your Airfield Driving Permit would turn into confetti!
Safer than riding a wheel change gantry though!

No one has mentioned the Fastrac yet? Loved these, though did get chewed out for speeding in one with a Harrier on the back:PDT_Xtremez_14:Fastrac.jpg

Can't beat a moggy, c'mon....

Ohh yes, my "beast" of choice on the Harrier Force. I spent 3 years velcroed to one.

Got a colossal b0ll0ckin one morning; the SENGO unfortunately came in early and caught me with one on the front, one on the back and no brakeman in either.

My punishment - I owed him 2 babysits !!!! Those were the days.......

If you were on SH in the 80's, you might have remembered a little beast called a "Donkey", which was a bitch among princes of ground equipment towing. It was in fact, a ton of solid metal designed in every way to hurt you if you were not careful.

That said, the trick is to be half cut, and to ride one on a friday afternoon with a gut full of Courage Directors was the dogs doodahs.

Pity I cant find a piccy.

Moggy pic for the young un's. How far up the HAS wall could you drive yours?
the unimog we had at Odious was never that modern lol, we also had to wear a kidney belt if we drove it over a certain distance, to try and absorb some of the vibrations... oh them were the days, was replaced by fastrac after that

I have seen

I have seen

An old UniMog down these parts (Matt Green) with RAF roundel stickers still plastered on it. The guy who owns it uses it for his odds n sods work.

I assume it came from One of the old RAFG units in the North. He did say that he bought it off an ex-military dealer based from somewhere in the North, so it is feasible that it is EX RAF.

The last one on the Harrier OCU was overhauled, painted gloss green, given back to the Sqn for about 2 weeks then disposed of by the usual people up at witham sales and replaced by another crap yellow dougy. sad times.
