Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone has heard of anyone not being signed on or med discharged for having an allergy. I am currently faced with a rather worrying situation. I have been permanently downgraded to A4G3Z4 and unfit outside base areas, for a nut allergy. I have also been told it is unlikely I will get signed on to 22 years even though I am recently promoted! It really winds me up. I have never failed a fitness test and keep myself fit anyway. All these bloody fatties that are a disgrace to the armed forces and they have the nerve to screw me over like this!!

Well I think you find that most of the "fatties" do their fair share of OOA duties unlike these medically unfit people we keep on the books....hope they don't sign you on, bloody sick chits.....

Crack on............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

u asked the med center!? apparently im clinically obese but i still got signed on lol. and no im not one of these biffs who cant pass the fitness test tyvm

Being down graded means you can still be promoted but not signed on. it is unfortunate that you have a nut allergy but the actual logistic effort to sustain you in theatre is impossible. Whilst you may feel a bit agrieved there are plenty of fatties who pass fitness tests and do OOA so whilst you may not be happy dont have a go at those who a fully capable of fulfiling both home and OOA deployments despite the odd tyre or 2

A permanent downgrading to the level nofinliver has will bar any extension of service because you are "unfit worldwide service". I must admit I was surprised to see the MES was so low for a nut allergy. Is there any scope for this to be reviewed? Can the allergy be controlled through diet or is it so acute that being in the same room as Sausage2 (who is nuts!) will set you off?

Dependent on the severity then yes the MES is accurate, there is no way of ensuring that the food the individual receives whilst OOA will not be contaminated by nuts hence the MES, it also takes into account the type of medical necessary to deal with the condition.

It's unfortunate, but look at it this way, most Civilian employers would get rid of you pronto if you were unable to do your job. Whilst I sympathise in the fact it's not your fault, at least the RAF is keeping you in gainful employment for the time being; it's something you wouldn't get in the outside world.

Think you have lost it fella as soon as you have had you 3rd sucessive downgrade and sat the board it's pretty much cut and dried. I'm on the same with an ear problem but to age 47, which is when I was going to leave anyway.
My restrictions are a max 2 hours of headsets a day, no Falklands or OOA due to lack of Medical care but I can go to Germany or Cyprus, work that one out.

The level of emergency care available at these two locations is sufficient to deal with any complications to your medical issue, a hearing issue is far easier to control than a dietry one however

The system is there to provide protection to both the RAF and the serviceman, if a person with a severe nut allergy is unknowingly give contaminated food they can be dead in minutes without the proper treatment. Putting someone at risk would be negligent hence the MES it may seem petty but there is method in the madness

it was just on a personal note about the petty bit.
I could have been sorted out years ago if they had done something about it, rather than been sent around the Country from ENT to ENT specialist for 10 minutes at a time, then taking nearly 10 years before deciding I was unfit. Is it wise to put gromits in if you have perforated ear drum, but then again I am no specialist in the ENT field

Now that the forces have to provide Halal, kosher and whatever else foods these days, surely a nut free diet can be adminstered?

Yes, I know. (before you jump on me.)

But has the RAF ever considered sending VALUABLE airmen and airwomen for INEXPENSIVE allergy testing and de-sensitisation?

TW

There is no way that you can ensure a nut free environment on ops plus as mentioned previously mentioned, the level of medical care, the provision of Halal, Kosher food etc is a religious issue and deals with the way the animal is slaughtered so we could all eat Halal, Kosher food but still not possible to prove the nut free environment

What if the de-sensitization didn't work? Would you then be in favour of Med Discharge?

I'm sorry for the OP but as much as it sucks - it's just one of those things. BTW, you probably won't get Med Discharged (unless for some reason there becomes an increased risk in the service exposing you) but you're highly unlikely to be signed on. Fingers crossed someone comes up with a cure in the mean time.

As Penfold says the MES is there to protect you as much as covering the RAF's ar5e, what can be treated easily in the UK with casualty departments and ambulances but a call away will probably end up much more serious on ops, not only would resources be used to save a individual's life (yours) but they would not be able to support what they are there for worse case seniario somebody else dying.

I know it sounds bad but use your time wisely get some quals for the outside and make some plans.

Good luck for the future.

Thanks for all the comments. My main gripe with this is that the Air Farce knew about it when I joined. I have never hidden it from them. Only a few years ago they issued Med Tags stating I had an allergy. So why only now after serving nearly 7 years have they decided to downgrade me. This is my first downgrading and so very annoying to jump from A4G1Z1 TO A4G3Z4 in one fell swoop!I appreciate they have my wellbeing to consider but it is their ignorance in the first place that has left me in this situation.
