Modweb...no more desk phone?

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
So, we got briefed earlier today about the rollout of Modweb here in the West Mids next March to replace DII. The key highlight point appears to be the fact that the normal desk phones will be almost completely removed and replaced by a web-based Skype types system where everyone will have their own 'phone number'. The key point appears to be that in order to talk to someone in another section two things need to happen:
-You need to know the name of the person you are calling so as to find their number and..
-They need to be online at the time in order to receive the call.

Wait, what? That has been miscommunicated or misunderstood surely? In order to ring, say, Tmech or C4I I need to know the actual name of someone in the section so I can find their number AND hope they are on their computer when I call? This can't work in workplaces with shared PCs surely? We have 4 between 15 or so of us, I'd imaging there are sections/squadrons where the ratio is even bigger. This can't be happening surely?

Is this going to another ?

"We want a dog but will purchase a cat and modify it until it costs more and still doesn't work"

It's being billed as 'Evergreen', so it'll roll with the changes pushed out by Microsoft, with a slight pause (never more than 90 days, I've heard).

This will mean it can't be highly customised, because any modifications the MoD make could break this procedure.

We've spend £1.5 Billion on it, so it best be a Crufts winner!

If you're on DII, there a lot of information on both the Defence Intranet and MOSS.

As a minimum all the storage and backups should be within the UK and preferably inside current / future MOD establishments.

After all we don't want our Nuclear Submarine schedules and routes being held in Chinese or Russian servers do we?

Or will that be the cheap (aka preferred) option.

Luckily, for assurance/accreditation, that's not an option ! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

So if SAC Bloggs needs to phone me back who's phone does he use if 98% have now been removed?

His Skype to your Skype
or
His Skype to the IP phone in your office / nearby office
or
The IP phone is his office to your Skype
or
The IP phone in his office to the IP phone in your office

In scenario one, he'll know if you're logged on, and if you're busy. Either way, he'll know not to bother ringing and can email you instead. Which he probably will anyway. Think of what you do at home and how many people you physically call as apposed to email / text / web chat.

It's not going to be a huge departure from what we do now.

What if SAC Bloggs is a techie with no PC/Phone of his own? So he has to log on before he can even call me? Or will he/we still have a proper physical phone albeit connected to the IT system?

Yep, so there's still going to be physical phones dotted about. They're termed 'hard voice', which is was Space Cowby was on about in this post;

80% soft voice IP - This is users who use MODNet all the time and they will get a headset.

20% hard voice IP - This is a traditional looking phone but is connected to the network in a different manner. This is ideal for those buildings which have DII at present but say 10 staff and 1 DII UAD.

Why keep trying to re invent the wheel. Just get up in the loft and dust down all those "squawk boxes"
Push one button......"hello" Job done.

Call around 85 to 90% of my contacts, email, text the remaining 10 to 15% and web chat never. I know fecking Dinosaur
