Having read this, I am a smidge concerned. I'm on 22 and stayed with apfs 75; I will be 41 at my 22 point. So should I buy some lube for the shafting??

What shafting are you assuming you will get? I dont get your point. The way i understood the IBNs you keep your current engagement length. It only changes if you get promoted after 1 apr 15, and they are working on giving longer engagements where they can later in the year.

A sgt in my place is downgraded at present (really wants to sign on) due to a sports injury. As it stands his last day in blue is one day short of his 22 year point as he joined before 18 years old.

How can that be as service doesn't count until 18 or did he transfer to '05?

That doesn't make sense. As above qualifying service does not start until 18ys of age and even if downgraded then Med Boards would usually allow them to see out there current engagement.

Been 1 day short of an Immediate Pension? That would be a PR disaster!

Although not med related my, engagement was incorrect by one day! I only found out when i queried with the FPS about the best options pension wise for myself. A phone call to PSF and within a few days my JPA reflected a new exit date of 1 extra day.

Is there more to this Sgts story?

Really? Think again. If a beancounter can find a way to save even half a bean, he will. PR disasters can be wiped away quicker than a scammer with your chip and pin can clear your bank account.

And you should revisit your comment about med boards. They are there to kick the sick, lame and lazy out, end of.

After now reading it. It does look like I'm OK (phew) thought myself and quite a few other colleagues were going to be stiffed.

So you associate the sick and the lame (probably acquired in the service of this country) with the lazy, do you? Interesting, the very same happened to Bader (who I once had the privilege to meet) and look how he turned out. "End of," my @rse!

You come across as very bitter..........

That certainly isn't the case. I have had several colleagues allowed to finish their engagements, one was even asked whether they wanted to be med discharged or carry on and see their time out.

Everyone has their views, but my experience to date is that they are not just there to get rid.

Also what about the guys who were months short of IP during the recent redundancies? That situation made national news and Parliamentary questions which resulted in a good turnaround for many. 1 day is easily resolved to ensure the IP (and if not, then there are other underhand methods available!)

I'm sorry to learn that. The only Euro institution I have any particular time for is the Court of Human Rights. It has been known to be of use to UK servicemen/ex-servicemen. But it's not for me to tell you your business.

The way he explained it to me; although he will have completed 22 yrs of service from his 18th birthday at 1159 hrs the day before his 40th birthday thus not 22 yrs from his 18th birthday. It didn't make sense to me but he showed me on JPA and then showed me on the pension calculator... I told him to seek advice as I'm sure it's not right.

On JPA it will show your exit date as the day before your 22 year point, mine certainly does. I joined before 18 on afps75 my exit date is the day before my birthday. When you put that date in the calculator it shows exactly the right amount of time served I.e. 22 years exactly. Maybe that is what is happening to your Sgt he just thinks he is leaving one day short when in fact all is well.

If you include the day of your 40th birthday then you serve 22 years plus 1 day.

Rather oddly that many people forget that their 40th birthday is the first day of their 41st year of life.

I used to be bitter about it, but not any more! I can't change what happened and tbh, it was 13 years ago when the bombshell was delivered.

It does, however, appear from your post that things have changed for the better which is something I have always wanted to see! Even better, according to my friends who are still serving, your post confirms that indeed, when they tell me that things are better, like you described, that is a great achievement by those who effected the change!

I'm in a good place as far as life goes and wouldn't change it for the world ::D:

However, back on topic, the NEM MUST be written in such a way that people are looked after and looked after well if they find themselves falling upon hard times because of their service.
