It's a very good point Mug and it will only get picked up if you're audited.

It's something many of the guys on my sqn have been doing for a while when in the USA on detachment. I haven't got around to checking the legality of it yet, but one of the "joys" of JPA is that you can claim and be paid almost anything you damn well please. If you get audited and it turns out you shouldn't have had it then you just claim that you misunderstood the regulations.

What about this way?

What about this way?

Why not just treat it as your own type of "Pay As You Dine"???
Simply put in missed meal claims, once a week for everytime you didn't go to the mess? Thats what I'm going/hoping to do should I have to serve un-accompanied later this year. Bit of a ball-ache with all the extra admin entailed but at least you won't be out of pocket & this might highlight the situation to the "powers that be". I'm sure one of our regular admin bods will be able to enlighten us further on the legalities of this.

Nice try

Nice try

Needs to be over 48 hrs at the minute I think. Changing to 24 Next year. They don't care whether you go or not. You are deemed to go if you are at work / on duty.
Remember the threat of being charged for not attending Breakfast at Swinderby

As I said before somewhere, if they make me buy a meal ticket thats fine, but taking it straight out my pay when on a course is wrong!

The rates for missed meal payments are as follows:

Breakfast - £0.64
Main meal - £2.14
Third meal - £1.49

The total claimable for missed meals for any given day is therefore £4.27 which is more than the standard food charge (17.5% more to be exact, because of VAT). HM Revenue & Customs would therefore be better placed to advise you on the legality of your proposal.

Obviously that poses a slight problem with my plan.

Having been informed by my soon to be new civvie boss that only 30 mins lunch break is allowed (10 mins getting changed/transit to mess each way and obviously only 10 mins to eat lunch) & that with excellent T-Bar facilities available at cost to the individuals, its a fantastic place to work:PDT_Xtremez_34: I think I will have no choice but to claim for at least 1 missed meal per day, possibly evening meal too, as being a responsible mature married man:PDT_Xtremez_15: , I take it I can still make the decision as to when I am hungry & where & what I wish to eat, even though my missus won't be there to tell me!!!

Prehaps its time the RAF introduced a scheme where individuals had the facility to opt out of food charges at non PAYD camps. Policing this can't be that hard as I presume spot checks are still carried out at the majority of RAF messes???

Ouch. Not sure where you are but doesn't that contravene station standing orders? If he can do that legally, then in your place I would fail my fitness test at the earliest opportunity so that I could "go to the gym" during work time. In the meantime, you don't really have much choice but to claim a missed meal payment for lunch. £1.49 per day x 210 average work days per year = £312.90 per serviceman per year for missed meals. Could make a dent in your boss's travel & subsistence budget! Of course, I've just realised that you could get a butty box from the mess each morning, so that probably negates that.

It's one of my "favourite" military anachronisms. Junior Ranks get hungry earlier in the evening than officers. The number of times I skipped dinner in my singly days 'cos I'm just not hungry at 5 o'clock doesn't bear thinking about.

Off Topic Can't name the exact location, but its 2nd Line A/C maint with BAE managment, so they probably laugh in the face of SSO's (newly established due to budget contraints/deals) and its not far from Kings Lynn. Apparently the new regime isn't too happy about the 2 X 50 mins PT sessions either as its "counter productive" with regards to contractual agreements. As for getting a butty box I'd rather have the option, after all I joined the RAF not BAE so as far as I'm concerned they can go "**** themselves"::/: !!!Off Topic

Cheers for the info TBJ, I can't wait to see the outcome.....I just hope someone will see sense, but I very much doubt it!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_42:

The Junior Rank meal times have always gripped my sh1t as well TBJ. Why are airmen supposed to get up at the weekend for breakfast at a normal time while the ossifers lie around in bed most of the morning tossing off and then go off and have a rather nice brunch?

Hard lesson to learn but, this company is run by officers for officers. As soon as this lesson is learnt, it all becomes clear.:PDT_Xtremez_30:
