New manning site

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
What I see is a very small group of people looking at some bits of paper written by vastly different people with hugely different styles and views on what a report should be. Many containing lies and exagerations. Then deciding that out of 6 hundred+ people spread across the UK and indeed the world. 15 people at one station are all within 1 or 2 places of each other despite, some having very little experience and no secondary duties or interests and some exceptionaly keen and capable people.
The same small group of people that still believe someone who has been at the same unit and the same reporting chain for their entire short career is more worthy than someone with consistently good reports accross several units and considerable more years experience in different situations.

I know this has turned into an Off Topic rant and I may sound bitter and twisted but I see a hell of a lot of colleagues that work harder and are more capable than some people who have been picked up.

I realise the boarding job is hard and how difficult it is to read all the reports, and I also appreciate you can only go what is in the reports, and make the right choice but I still feel it is the wrong way to do it.

Fair enough, I respect your opinion. If you scoot through previous Shiney threads you will see I have advocated a change to the system. I believe that to be selected for promotion an individual shout have passed basic reading and writing skills courses plus a trade related promotion exam. Then, and only then, should they be considered competetive at pre-boarding level. I'm sure the older Goaters on the forum will remember this was how it used to be..........

However, quite simply, if you didn't get promoted, and someone else did, they are better. Harsh, but true.

An intresting comment, but not true. Individuals are promoted on the basis of their Annual Appraisals. It is the Appraisal that is graded and considered, the PSB do not see the individual although occaisionally they might have personal knowledge of the individual. Therefore individuals who have the best written appraisals are the ones who get promoted, and whilst in the main better individuals are promoted some who are equal in all respects but their appraisals are not.

Given that we are such a mobile workforce for which the civil servant model wouldnt fit (interview for all posts)....how would you promote folk?

I agree with you KingGuin, in so much as bringing back the English (Defence writing) cses especially for prospective SNCO's after all they will be the ones "writing" the reports of the future. So many good people have fallen by the wayside due to badly written reports. I personally can't see it getting better in the future as the standards of the written word expected of the new entrants of today has dropped sigificantly as a reslut of do gooders in society not wanting anyone to fail!!.

Busby, as ever, you raise a valid point. There is always a natural inclination to favour a well written report, however the 3 PSBs I sat on took into consideration that not all ROs are as gifted at portraying individuals as others. Nonetheless each Board still managed, IMHO, to promote the best candidates.

However, that said, an individual can and should challenge ROs if they feel their report is poorly written. Easier said than done I know but would you not expect potential NCO/SNCOs to display morale courage?

Regardless, every PSB will raise eyebrows!

I gather, from a recent brief by a DACOS from manning that Promotions lists, for Airmen and Officers will be published in the very near future. Only those on the PSL, and are predicted to be used, will feature on the list. A good move towards greater transparency.

Are there any HR guru's that could outline the pro's and cons be if manning published the full results including the PSL, A's, B's, C's ungraded and unread.

While we're talking about promotions, does anyone know of anyone that came of the Cpl-Sgt board getting their postings.......oops sorry....assignments yet? Feel free to PM me, thanks
