Eating and drinking is pretty good in NY, plenty of Irish bars etc and considering the location it's not too bad price wise. Only a weekend is a quick visit indeed, I went for 4 days in 2006 and just about managed to get everything in (walked for miles). Empire state building is a must (and cheap as chips), a trip around or past Liberty Island is good for photo's etc and Ellis island (early immigration) is interesting. Central Park is nice. They have USS Intrepid (aircraft carrier) as a museum which you can see from ESB. All in all, an ace place.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I did something similar for my 10th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed it but in some ways I was disappointed - there were no surprises. Every time I go to London I see something new but NY (Manhattan at least) didn't seem to have anything that I haven't seen in countless films, sitcoms, etc.

We got a cheap last-minute package deal and stayed in a grotty dive just off Times Square. We weren't too bothered because it was just a place to keep our toothbrushes but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It never occurred to me to flash my disco pass (first trip Stateside) so I paid full price everywhere we went. Big mistake!

Go to Boston instead.
I go every year on a jolly boys outing, beats NY into a cocked hat.
nice people Nice City

I agree with Rikster, I've been to Boston and New York a few times and have to say that Boston is so much nicer than NY

stay away from times square for the cheaper and better pubs but you will miss popular ones like hard rock cafe, as said before there are lots of Irish bars, went for 10 nights recently and we didnt see everything so I wouldn't even try, especially as its a boys weekend, if you want to quickly see the statue of liberty catch the staton island ferry, it runs every half an hour each way and its free, it take you past the statue and ellis island without the long queus you have for the liberty island tour. We used the lonley planet guide which has good maps of the subway, streets, transit routes etc and is really goog for all attractions including pubs, bars and clubs. Dont think we would have seen as much with the others we looked at, if your into rock thier is quite a good rock n roll karaoke with a live band as your back up, best of all most places sell stella at prices you would be happy with over here. have fun

Went in 2003 as part of an exchange program.
Use your I.D. card whenever you can
If anyone asks what your in explain your in the RAF and just back from Iraq or AFG
Use Sqn teeshirts if you have any
Visit as many places as possible I recommened getting the subway out to Yankee Stadium if you have time
The I.D card again wil work wonders we got in for free (they hold hundreds of free tickets just for forces, police etc)
It's nice just to say you've been and it's pretty chilled if you just want to relax with a few beers and a hotdog for a couple of hours

Remember slight walting is allowed when pulling or getting freebies:PDT_Xtremez_28:

I go as often as possible for the baseball - the SSMA club is genius.

Right in Manhattan, great diner up the road for beakfast.

Top-tips: If you fly into Newark, there is a bus that runs to the Port Authority for $12, don't go for a taxi as that will sting you for about $40

If you fly into JFK or La Guardia, don't queue up for a yellow cab, you'll be there for hours, look for the private run mini-vans and hop in with a few others heading into Manhattan and it will be quicker and cheaper.

Watch out for the "hip-hop" scammers in Times Square - they'll grab you and ask thrust a CD in your hand.....then they'll try and ask for a "donation" Just walk straight past . They are everywhere.

Mate, I disagree with anyone slagging off NY.

Ive been twice and its amazing, the best city in the world.

You will love it.

Not slagging NY off, its just not the best City, if you are lucky enough to have some seriously good travel perks(like me:PDT_Xtremez_15: ), Boston is better, Dallas/Fort Worth is great, Seriously recommend Buenos Aries Arg. or Santiago in Chile, to mention but a few:PDT_Xtremez_28:

In your opinion.

This I.D card everyone is on about, does it work in any country? Isit like a coppers warrant card? To show your Military?

sort of like a warrent card but more like a driving licence saying RAF etc, just our military ID. Use it in most places but I wouldn't recomend it in down town Karachi

You'll find it works in most countries apart from the one that you represent.

Good thread - moving out to the States later this year and NYC will be just up the road so please keep the tips & tricks coming especially those familiar with Washington and Maryland (I've only been out the once so far)
