Can you report back on what it was like (location/facils, ect). I'm interested in using it myself.
Will do matey, SSMA booked at $50 a night. Not bad taking into account location, booked only 1 night and hope to get lucky....At my time of life, we discussed this morning that a pulse was on the desirable rather than essential list!

Sorry to ressurect an old thread but im off to the big apple in March as a suprise trip for my other half.

Has anyone got any experiences and success stories of getting miltary discount at the major NY attractions by showing ID?

Thanks,

BD

Have a look here mate - its a good place to start.

Its always worth a punt showing your ID card, but don't forget to add the words 'Allied Forces', because some yanks are mince and won't have a clue what the RAF is. Maybe dropping into the mix about your tours in sandy places, may also add to the discount...... its worked for me.

You may also want to check out Famous Fat Dave's Eating tour

You may think it may be a little pricey - but when you work out what you're getting - its actually quite good value and you get to eat in some of the best places in New York.

NYC is my fave holiday destination been several times next to Gold Coast and Dubai. ESPN Sports bar along with the biggest TV screens ever and BB Kings Blues bar are a must. ESPN is on Times Square and BB Kings is just off Broadway. Saw Aretha Franklin in there, awesome.

As for military discount I got it for Madison square gardens to watch the Ice Hockey and I also got it at Shea Stadium for the baseball. You can also use it on the aircraft carrier museum which is well worth a look.

Just wondering how you got on BD? Thinking of going to NYC later in the year and wondering how well you got on with the ID?

Just seen you can get in the Empire State Building for cheap with your ID ... free in uniform!

I'm a regular visitor to NYC and the wife and I head over there as often as we can. However, just to give you the heads up I try for the ID card discount at the Empire State Building every time I go and I have still to get a discount. Apparently it's only for US servicepeople. Of course, I may just be unlucky! I did get a discount at the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island though.

That's a shame as their website states it's international forces. May print it out and take it with me! Ha ha!

(Took me quarter of an hour to write this ... couldn't stop staring at your avatar!)

I too have been refused military discount at the Empire State however have recieved discount elswhere all over Manhattan, dont ask dont get!

Also for accomodation having been to NYC a few times me and Mrs Det regulary stay at the Navy Lodge, Staten Island. It is about a 10 minute drive from the Staten Island Ferry (which is free) and costs $7 - $12 for all day parking.

The Navy Lodge is situated right under the Verrazono Bridge on a US Coast Guard camp and is a bargain compared to Manhattan Prices! Only downside is it can only be booked within 60 days of intended travel! There is a small BX on the unit though.

All in all highly recommended

As I said mate, maybe I've just been unlucky. Whenever I've been, the counter staff seemed a bit miserable so I've felt that even asking to get into the building in the first place was a major effort! Let us know if you manage to get some success, so the next I go I can use the gen as a big stick to beat them with when I argue the toss!

But, go over there and enjoy what is probably the greatest city on Earth. People say you're tired of London, you tired of life. Well if you tire of NYC, then maybe it's time to throw yourself under a train!
