Oil change - but no ramp...?

yes you could waste time trying to get a few more drops out by jacking up the car front and slightly higher at the rear. :PDT_Xtremez_44:

Whoah, hang on. You originally said "Don't forget that the vehicle should be level, otherwise the oil won't all drain out". I was merely saying that in some cars, the oil will never "all drain out" if it's level, that's all. As Teh Wal said, for the home mechanic carrying out an oil change on his drive, it's probably easier to just jack up part of the car with a jack anyway as well as getting more oil out. Given that my Escort has the sump plug on the back of the sump that's the way I do it.

The easiest and cleanest way to do an oil/filter change without having to go to the hassle of jacking the car up is to invest in one of these:

Ive got one and its a good bit of kit for the money. I do an oil/filter change on my car about every 5000 miles as it gets thrashed on track days a lot.

Basically you warm the engine up, then turn it off. Stick the probe down the dipstick, use the pump about 20 times and the oil will be extracted direct from the sump.

No hassle, No mess, No problems!

If you are going to quote me, then please quote the whole post. My original post was generic and still stands as that is how it is done in any garage. You are talking specifics and as I said before, but you seem to have missed that point, if he had stated what his car was then the advice could have been specific. With your knowledge for example, you should realise that it would not do much good putting a Mini (original not BMW) onto axle stands/ front wheel ramps to change the oil (and that is what I was originally trying to get across). At the end of the day given the price differential, I would take a standard car to Kwik Fit, because running to an oil disposal site is going to merely burn up the savings. If he really wants to do it himself, if there is a Motor Club, that's the best place as they will probably dispose of the waste.
 
There's no such thing as "generic" when it comes to car servicing as far as I'm concerned. If only there was - we'd save a packet on home servicng then

I have a set of generic tools, a range of metric spanners. They even work on my bike, and the kids bicycles....

Not to mention my hammer, that works on all manner of things...

But I don't own a Pug 306 Diesel, so I'd never have to. Unless of course you want me to purchase a tool for a car I don't own just in case...

My spanner is bigger than all of yours, must be because I've got big nuts.
 
But I don't own a Pug 306 Diesel, so I'd never have to. Unless of course you want me to purchase a tool for a car I don't own just in case...
But you implied that your set of spanners and a hammer could sort everything. Which they obviously can't

Which a lot of things are namely nuts, bolts, screws, etc, etc...
