On duty over the grant - leave entitlements

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
MWD as you should know you will have been credited with extra leave to cover the xmas grant (2 days) and and any stand down approved at your location, when you take it is up to you.

With regards the weekend in the middle what happens the rest of the year if someone is on Duty Clk over the weekend and gets called in? I'd be very surprised if you are credited with extra days for this weekend.

Busby, I know what I have been given thanks, I was just trying to find out what other units' take was on those who were on duty over the festive period. From the responses, it appears that those of us who have either been dicked, or in my case volunteered, to take the duties away from the juniors over the grant, are only being given 3 days back as a reward for undertaking 5 or more days duty!

EH whatever - Your comment about Brize shifties is noted. The comment about OOA personnel is irrelevent to my question.

I have awarded my lads who are working on the 26th /27th two days standdown. These can be taken throughout Jan/Feb/Mar although as they are a Saturday and Sunday they must be taken on a Saturday or Sunday.

Hope this helps:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Reward

Reward

The usual reward for volunteering for grant duty clks were normally a few months grace from Duty Clk, are you doing put your grant back in over a weeks end and you'll get five days off.

Perhaps you should of clarified the situation before you volunteered!

Anyway, as some have said, you should only put leave in for the period you are not on duty, then whether you get called in or not is irrelevant.

Some would say typical of RAF; units differing in their approach, others woud say it is common sense....I would say this is not a new thing! Get someone to make a feckin rule about this particular thing as it seems to come up every errrr year!

I like the Dep Chf Clk 'saved by the snow'.....I bet he didn't know the rule (because it doesn't exist) but would of given his opinion on the subject and how it was to be on your unit.

In fact while I think about it, I say there is no 'rule' but I suggest there is: no leave if you are on duty!

Merry Christmas to one and all

Every unit I've been to that I've had to work a shift pattern gave no "extra" days off for working my normal shift pattern that happened to be over a public holiday. The days were automatically added to my JPA balance and I just didn't have to put them in because I was on duty. I certainly never got days back in leiu of weekends when I was a shifty.

You've volunteered for Call/Duty over Chrimbo, by doing so you have made it possibe for other people to enjoy time with their families and your reward is the FACT that you're a decent person and people at your work SHOULD remember this for future consideration when sh!tty jobs come around again.

Very true and the line managers should also remember. The guys who are on guard this Christmas from my section will get the nice trips when they come round.

Thanks Chris but it doesnt work like that here - only the mistakes you make (or others think you make) appear to be remembered - I got a B- for "Teamwork" this year, down from a B+, and when I questioned it, was told it was because I told one individual to delete me from a distribution list she had created for a USA det next year (because I was not going).

I pointed out quite bluntly that I was about to commence my 3rd consecutive year of duty clerk (all voluntary) over the festive period, and how did that fit into his view of my teamwork. It didnt get changed so I used the right to reply box to question his views.

It would have been a nice touch for any volunteers for duty clerk/stacker/ etc to be contacted by the senior officer responsible for that duty (ie OC Admin for clerks) and thanked for giving up their time so that others were not forced to do it.

Sadly, this also does not appear to be the case.

Quite right too. The guys who volunteered in my section will get that extra special standown when they want it. I call it investing in people (or looking after your lads and lasses.)

In a building not so far from yours (2nd or 3rd hangar down) my hubby is on standby duty over the festive period and therefore has had 5 days returned to him on JPA.

As was stated in the previous thread we can only be in 3 states:

ILA
SD
Duty

This year we were given 8 days extra bank holidays regardless of when Xmas/Boxing day/New year falls and therefore we are expected to use them to cover the gaps which include Xmas/New years eve.

I know the guys on duty in the SMC over xmas have been granted SD but that is a locally agreed thing.

Good luck with your quest, but you are in a good position to know that different people interpret the JSPs in different ways.

Started duty today, finish 4 Jan when the station goes back to work ,I did volunteer as was staying in the local area, had to put a leave pass in and got the days back, also had an early grant

At my unit we have had to put leave in for the whole festive period and will only get the days back if we are actually called in whilst on standy by duty.
How about. As they offer you the ‘Duty Phone / Bleeper’ …

Hand it back stating you don’t require it / them during your Leave of Absence.

or

Ask for written confirmation that your leave has been cancelled prior to starting an ‘Official Period of Duty’.

or

Ask for written confirmation that while carrying out an ‘Official Period of Duty’ you are covered by the RAF for ALL damages / claims that may arise during you Leave of Absence.

Or failing that …

Tell them that you will accept the ‘Duty Phone / Bleeper’ and will be going on normal leave (making sure that you have hard copy evidence that the leave pass had been authorised and processed) and will totally disregard the damned things until after your leave.

What can they do?

Seems to me that one hell of a lot of the SNCOs and Warrant Officers in today’s RAF have either lost the ability to use common sense or have become as spineless as a jellyfish. Personally I feel it is the latter of the 2!

To be honest this should be as black and white as..... well black and white! It sounds to me like people don't want to loose workers more than anything so instead of getting the festive period off as work is shut, then the christmas grant again. They are reliant on the fact that you won't get called and will have you in work regardless of the fact that you had to stay sober and within a time limit from base....

That said, it takes some real backbone to submit that pass knowing your being f*cked over...
