Poppy Etiquette

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I met one at Wyton on 51 Sqd, they were known as Radio Operator Voice, which seemed a bit of a bizarre trade name, and they seemed to be lonely blokes due to the work they did (unless it was just the one I knew), I got friendly with one and a few people in the security arena got twitchy.

Sounds like he is full of it to me. You should have just told him to go away as an irrelevance.

Rather sadly I have looked at dress Regs and;

AP1358, CHAP 1

Temporary/National Emblems
0132. No unauthorised ornament or emblem is to be worn with uniform. The following exceptions are permitted, provided the wearer is not on
parade:
a. The national flower or emblem on St George’s, St Andrew’s, St David’s and St Patrick’s Day, according to nationality.
b. Remembrance Day Poppy. The poppy may be worn from the onset of sales. Poppies are to be removed after the National and local
observation of remembrance has concluded each year.

c. Flags and emblems on the authorised day.

That is all that is said in the official RAF dress regs, so I am happy that he has made up his rather starange leaf positioning twaddle.

Hi, just wanted to confirm that the trade was Radio Operator (Voice) -its what my Dad did when I was a kid (he joined up late 70's)

Jimps,

I know a few CSA(V)'s mate.... ask him where he was posted during his service.......... see what he comes up with.

but as a confirmed dick the answer will likely involve winking, tapping of side of nose and a few Tom Cruise "Maverick" quotes.

I knew a few of these guys to chat to, they were ROVs then, some were a bit tapped but most were similar to TG3s and 11s. There was no more of a great mystique about them than there was about us.

I'd say more but, well, you know, nudge nudge zzzzzzzz

. I once tested this theory by asking him if he ever worked in a bunker at Akrotiri called the 'Mole'

The only 'mole' I ever heard of at Akrotiri was part of the port facility.
Cyprus had a lot of our types in all shapes and forms and they weren't located on RAF Akrotiri.

GOTCHA!
There he was this morning, smug with his acolytes sat in the canteen. I asked him if he did his trade training at North Luffenham with all the other secret squirrels. He seemed quite indignant that I should have asked him this, but confirmed that he did. I then got into a bit of light hearted stuff about how his trade had the best looking girls etc and how it was always worth a run up to the NAAFI bop because of that blah blah blah to set him at his ease before the killer blow:

Was he ever there in the summer? Yes he says. You must remember Rutland Water getting so low every year that the church spire in the village flooded to make the reservoir peeped out of the water. Oh yes he replies. I said that I wasn't sure if the village was called Edith Weston or Uppingham which was flooded and good as gold he came straight back with Uppingham.

Just to be doubly sure he is a Walt we carried on the conversation and he got suckered in. Bearing in mind he puts his service as early to mid eighties I asked him if he remembered the big russian invasion type Exercise Brave Defender? Oh yes he said we were heavily involved, knowing wink. It was alright says I but was glad when that Valliant Bomber crashed and they finished the Ex two days early....And he agreed with me.

I then produced the Google Earth map clearly showing Uppingham and the Wiki page for the Valliant showing it exited service in the 60's. I then told him in front of all his mates that liars are not very nice people and people who lie about being in the mob are sick and twisted individuals. He just went bright red and practically sprinted out of the canteen.

We have since had another chat and it turns out he was a spacey who did a summer camp at Gatow and 'got carried away with the story'. I have told him that if he bullshts anyone ever again in this way the 'consequences will be severe, I think you know what I mean' knowing wink.

So thanks to all of you who helped on this. One less Walt is a good result in my book!

After the day I have had this is a good result. Well done and I know who to come to next time I need a well planned trap laid.:PDT_Xtremez_19:

Quality trapping there, you are now E-Goat's very own Walt Finder General! Now all you need to do is either submit an entry for the Goatapedia or head on over to ARRSE and make an entry there.
Oh and name the walt!!!

Priceless!!! Have one of these cup of corrrfeee

BTW, what was the shade of crimson on a scale of 1 to 10?? :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Me and the Walt had a bit of a chat this morning away from the burning shame he suffered yesterday and I have left him in no doubt at all that his Walting days are over or else there will be real local paper type trouble. The eejit even thanked me for 'taking away a heavy load he has had on his shoulders for all the years since he started the charade' (His words not mine)

At the end of it he offered me his hand, and I said I would shake it the day he proved to me he had truly repented and the best way to start was to get a £20 note stuck in the poppy jar. So the Legion got a result too!
