Has anyone got their own private plates ? I've been looking and think i've found what i want but not sure of the charges and when they have to be paid. Anyone ?

Got Mrs TB a private plate as a pressie a couple of years ago the cost of the reg No. is one thing that's up to you as they vary in price a lot depending upon the letter number configuration. But the transfer fee to replace your existing standard plate is around £80 via your local road tax office. The process is far far quicker if you actually go there and sort the paperwork at the office. The new plates themselves will cost a few quid as well £15-£20 plus fitting is extra. I managed to drill two holes in some plastic myself and saved the £25 "fitting charge" they asked for the robbing gits.

Just don't get them made into those illegal (and in my opinion, pathetic) stylised plates with a different font. You'll look like a right barry boy then.

For all you pikey career men out there I would suggest buying a car registered in Truro; theres a reasonable chance that it will contain the letters RAF!

private plates = 'Non-U'.

harumpf.

Agreed private plates are very non-U and should be the sole preserve of c0cks and the Nouveau Riche so that they may be identified by the general populous and spurned accordingly. If you must insist on personalising your registration then go for something understated such as your last 3 and initials so that it looks like a normal plate, but you know it has been personalised.

I have a perfect personlised plate that matches my name and came free with my car.

yours etc,

Mr AF02GVP of Huntingdon.

HA yer, and then at the bottom of the plate put your name to let everybody know that you got this "not so private plate". ****** 's the lot of them.

Perhaps Mr Brown would like to bid for E3 RAF.

Seeing as how this is what he`s aiming for ... Establishment Three Royal Air Force.

1 Pilot ... 1 Navigator ... and 1 Air steward ... hey someones got to serve his drinks on the long hauls

Well this was sort of what i was going for......my initial, a 2 digit number and first 3 letters of surname...... It'll mean something to me but doesn't spell anything out (like TO55ER) and therefore it's not gonna be £2000 hanging of the front of the car.........more like £300 including transfer fee and plates.

It was just an idea.....may do it, may not....still undecided.

Cheers for all the replies about the MOT cert.

Crack on.................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

In which case why bother? Spend your spare £300 on something else - like Beer.

Actually, what you are suggesting could be interpreted as still appearing to hang £2000 off the front of your car but only actually hanging £300. It's the motoring equivalent of a cubic zirconium earing.

Deed Poll

Deed Poll

Tashy it might actually be cheaper to change your name by deed poll to match the existing letters your car already has and thereby saving the hassle and expense of a private plate in the first place. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Oh no......Please, please don't get private plates. It looks as though you are trying to compensate for something, is cheesy and makes you look like a show off. People will be inspired to say things like "look at that tw@t, who does he think he is with his private plates"? Then again that is just my humble opinion on the matter. However, all of the individuals that I have encountered who own them.......I have found.......well......to be a bit..... anal really. Much love.

Nothing says TO55 ER more than a chav plate.

Why not just spend the £10 to £15 and change your name via deed poll to match your car registration. ::P:

I've just done it! Best people to buy off is DVLA as mentioned. The price on their site includes VAT and transfer fee of £80.00, other sites don't necessarily have those included. Once you have bought from DVLA, they will check car is MOT'd and have the appropriate V5 asking who owns car and whos name the new registration is going in and send you another MOT with new plate with the docs. You then visit a DVLA office that are situated around the country, take all your docs & tax disc in, and they will do a one for one swap for the rest of the time the tax is valid. Get plates made up say like Halfrauds, then advise your insurance company to new reg. Easy!

I like the personalised plates....why not?
