Red Arrows - 70's Style

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I do believe that the image has been posted before on the goat, and stated that it is photoshop. Where's Tashy when you need him...........???
I think I "nicked" it from Pprune a long timeago..... :PDT_Xtremez_42:
and I believe it's a genuine photo. look at the burn mark on the grass.

You dumped it on the Best RAF Photo Thread if memory serves, Also it's not the only shot kicking around showing how low the Red's did fly back in the old days. Check DamienB's site Here. Mouse over comment tag on the photo of the Gnat at Fairford sums it up exactly.

The Go with Noakes footage brought back alot of childhood memories for me, though i was only 2 when that episode was filmed I do remember the reruns.

The paint scheme the Herc was in rears some memories for me too as i was living at Lyneham from 78 for a couple of years and got to go on the flight line alot with my stepdad (poodle pusher).

One thing I have not seen anyone pick up on yet though, I thought that it was a Foland Gnat not Hawker siddley can someone explain please.

Absolutely mate. I was about to up load it yesterday, then I saw the filename and just linked to it. A fabulous photo.
I stand corrected, and apologise most humbly to SB.

I have been directed to the original post on pprune, which SB alludes to nicking the pic from. (I'm sure that he wouldn't do such a thing?)

Heh heh heh ! :PDT_Xtremez_14: I'm afraid I did as I was most impressed by that shot. I think this quote says it better than I could !
PPrune's XR537 said:
The low-flying Gnat picture was Ray 'THE Gnat man' Hanna showing how to multitask in a Gnat.
1) Showing how it can be flown
2) Cutting the grass from the power of the jet back-blast
3) ...and blowing the clippings to the side

Haven't picked up the fact that the aircraft is called the Hawker Siddeley Gnat, because that's who actually built them for the RAF. The aircraft had been designed by Folland, but by the time the MoD ordered them Folland's Aircraft division had been absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation. Its the same for a lot of aircrat built in the early to mid 1960's. Early Harrier, Most people incorrectly called it the Hawker Harrier, the only jump jet built by Hawker was the P1127, all the rest before BAe was formed, (Kestral and GR1/3 T2/4 Harriar) were built by Hawker Siddeley (HSA). Lightning, early ones built by English Electric, most of them built by British Aircraft Corporation (who absorbed EE's aviation assests in 1960), same for VC-10 (Vickers didn't build aircraft when that aircraft actually made production), Trident (DH was histroy, part of HSA when the type entered service).

When I served, it was always referred to as the Folland Gnat for all the fuss & kerfuffle with HS.
