Of course I want the promotion, its what I have worked for, however if a different area had originally been offered I would of talked to my wife and probably taken it, however having been told that I am staying in the same area and then potentially being given a completly different area, I would probably be reluctantly forced to turn it down due to family circumstances, not the course of action I want to take, but what comes first family or location?
For me it is always family and it seems to be for most people I speak to, which is why I asked the question.
What are the options then? It is too late to offer you one of the posts that have been filled by people lower on the PSL than you. It may be possible for you to be promoted in situ a la Bitburger's mate - I suspect that decision may come down to your Stn budget manager so you might well have a fight on your hands to make that happen. In reality, I suspect you will have to wait for the next available post even if that is 6 months away and if you feel compelled to turn down that offer when it comes there will be nothing else you can do.
As a side issue: all my Service, people have spoken of "consequence of error" as a way to scale the trades (putting clerks at the bottom alongside stewards, musicians, etc.). Now nobody has died here today, but ICBI's strong (and justified) feelings on this matter show just how much impact a clerical error can have. Just a thought.
