So with the SAC-Cpl board ever fast approaching has anybody got any ideas of the numbers they want this year?

Thankyou in advance for any snippets of information you can give.

Add to that the Cpl to Sgt board only want 25 and the guy that is sat in No 11 slot is still waiting for the word after two months so it doesn't bode well for any of us.

The lass at number 1 in this year's board found out officially last month - and is posted in late November.

However, being No 1 off the board does not necessarily mean that one (pun intended) will be, or indeed was, used first!

Seconded. My SAC came off No2 last year and at least No5 was used before her before she was "offered" a job in the CinC office!

Pre-board quota was 20 but allegedly they will get no where near that.

The board was ratified yesterday, I was in the 20's and was told that they are only picking up single figures. Oh well another year as an SAC beckons!

Well that's not good - we are shortly going to be down 2 cpls (out of the established 4) and I am guessing there are units with far worse manning situations than us.

Promotion Board

I have lost all faith in the promotion, myself and 4 other clks I know were A grade candidates last year, this year we have all received better reports than the previous year, yet we are all B Grade candidates. What sort of incentive does that give us?

Lots of people will have had improved reports this year. The number of A grades relates directly to the quota. Was the quota smaller this year than last? I'm not sure what kind of incentive you would need, just keep plugging away.

Spoken like a true (ex) drafter Tommo! There are lots of Guys & Girls out there who truly deserve promotion but due to the draw-down and trade review are not going to get their just rewards (or at least for a few years yet). This is where the SNCO's start earning their money and manage & motivate these guys as best they can; it's not going to be easy and we will lose many good clerks along the way but we need these guys more than they need us. Just giving a 6 & a Spec these days just isn't enough (and yes, I know the scores are changing!) we need to make them feel valued and give them more responsibility. At least it's a start.

Couldn't agree more - there are many worthy candidates for promotion who are waiting. However, they should all be aware (Especially in our trade) of the promotion system and terminology; quota, field size, Main PSL, Reserve PSL, released, A, B, C grade, overlook etc etc. If an individual is an A grade one year but not an A grade the next year, and they think their report is better than the one that is dropped, then before arriving at a wrong conclusion (and possibly making a hasty decision) they should examine things like the size of the quotas and field sizes for the years in question. If after looking at all those things they can't identify a reason why they have not been promoted then it's fairly simple, but may sound harsh; if you are number 30, then it means, in the eyes of the PSB, there were 29 better people than you.

Tommo you are right in what you are saying here but in reality what people want is a little bit of hope, a chink of light regarding a future career for them. The PSB can only promote on what they see in front of them and can only promote the number of individuals required, this is cold comfort (but true neverless) to many out there who are desirous of a career but after a few years of attrition can no longer see it happening.

How about if anybody out there knows when we will get back into promoting more normal (10 - 15% of a given rank) numbers of individuals rather than the current trickle flow (about 5% ot less).

Nobody's going to know, let alone put their name to that little gem Busby! What we need to do in the next few years is start to value our clerks (or at least start to value them more), give them the responsibility they deserve, perhaps the option to extend their service when, through lack of opportunities, they cannot sign on and I don't suppose a little cash wouldn't go amiss. Retention is key to the future of our trade.

Just don't use the empowerment word, used as an excuse to work SACs harder with no commitment back.

As a trade I don't think we have never undervalued ourselves, we know that we cope with vague rules, customers (eh?) not telling us the whole truth yet wanting their problems sorting out toot sweet and constant change, we tend to be good at what we do and will be sorely missed in the areas where we have been removed under JPA.

If 2008 was the deadline for the changes to be finalised then allow them to settle down and let us get back to normal just like after the mid 90s, until the next time....

There is a little bit of hope, because we are still promoting some people, if not at the levels we have come to accept as normal. We would be in more bother if we were not promoting anyone at all. I accept that things are difficult just now, but things were much worse in the early to mid 90's when there was no promotion at all.
