There is a little bit of hope, because we are still promoting some people, if not at the levels we have come to accept as normal. We would be in more bother if we were not promoting anyone at all. I accept that things are difficult just now, but things were much worse in the early to mid 90's when there was no promotion at all.

Yep you're right in the mid 90s there was no hope, but whay happened next, all those that wanted to go were let go and promotion got back to normal straight away. What has happened this time, a fudge to meet the 30% JPA save money reduction in numbers, an attempt to force the pyramid manning onto a responsibility trade where we are in charge of things (money/bits of paper/welfare) rather than people when we are given extra rank.

I personally think the trade should be on an even keel pretty soon and promotion will start again, unfortunately, quite a few people have been through the mill and have become disenfranchised, perhaps a change too far for some, and will leave which is a shame.

Anyway this is getting way off topic lets let the SACs get their point across and move on ourselves.

For the last 3 years I have had very good positions on the prom boards but due to the way the trade is have missed out everytime, this year I have been told they could get to me but I am not holding my breath at all seeing as that is what I have been told every year so far!

I am an 8 year SAC, consider myself ready for promotion and have 6, specs across the board. I was an A grade this year unlike many who dropped but with the board quota being 64 people were inevitably going to drop from last year. After so long of working hard I am somewhat disillusioned at this time but firmly believe that promotion will start to flow again and I will be picked up eventually! I have signed on to 12 and will see that out, I get all I can out the RAF on the educational front so should have no issues in civvie street on the job front. As I have said I do firmly beleive i will get promoted before that point but am preparing myself just in case!

Don't get me wrong I am somewhat bitter, but can see it getting better, as has been said, at least the promotion system is still flowing and not ground to a complete halt. There is no harm in being an SAC for as long as I have, it just hones my skills and means that I will be a more rounded Cpl when I do get picked up (I am trying to remain positive).

However, I do know of many SAC's who have done the same time as me, or longer, who have already PVR'd but I do enjoy my job and want to stick it out and try to hold on to the hope that promotion will pick up......... eventually!!

BlahBlah I know exactly how you feel having joined in the early ninties and had several years of indifferent reports (thankfully it was during the promotion lull of the mid ninties) which set me back I had to wait for promotion to Cpl. I signed on to 12 years hoping to get picked up in that time unfortunately I didn't even though I felt I was ready, I was then advised to sign on to 15 years by my Chf Clk as he felt that an extra year would be enough. As there didn't appear to be anything better in civvy street for me and the fact I enjoyed the life even if I was a little bitter about the lack of promotion and the way more junior less experienced clks were getting promoted ahead of me. Signing on turned out to be agood thing as I finally got selected 3 years ago after 13 years as an SAC. Promotion cannot stay at it's current levels for long and by sticking to it you are being a realist. Why give up when patience can lead to it's own rewards with people like you who are prepared to accept things may be hard for a few years there is still hope for the trade as a whole. Good luck for the future and may you receive the reward you clearly deserve.
