come on lads no need for the bickering. its only a bunch of numbers and stuff.

I'm afraid that is what the majority of threads within TG4 lead too....

The TV I bought out here is dual voltage, i.e. 110 - 240v and we are bringing it home. It's something we looked out for, Sony are pretty good at producing dual voltage items.

I'm not saying that it isn't fabulous in the US of A, but its not just about the voltage of your electricals. Its so much more.

Your partner may give up work in the UK and may struggle to work here.

There is no public transport here so you need 2 cars. As SSH says, no credit rating, that brings a lot of other problems.

I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to give a heads up. There really are loads of hidden costs. Don't be put off, just reaserch every aspect.

Also I'm typing this as my family settle down for the night with me in the basement as we are on tornado watch.

Its a great experience but honestly it will cost you a packet (personal) to enjoy the experience. Good luck in your application.

I've watched a number of guys from my place disappear off to Oz over the past year and another factor for moving away is what to do with the stuff you can't take with you such as motors and excess furniture/electricals...It may not be feasible to shove them into storage for 'x' years and if you do have a yard sale be prepared to get only a fraction of what you paid for them...

From personal experience I would say go for it. We really enjoyed our time in the states and travelled over the whole of thewest coast of America.

yes it costs a bit to set up but it is more than worth it.

I would go back in a heartbeat, even with the lower allowances.

The allowances are not why i chose to go out to the states.

Count again in 2 years and see how many are back from Oz!

After 7 years in Texas, followed 2 in North Carolina we moved to Melbourne in 2009. Last month we joined the alarming stat of 65% of people who emigrate to Oz can't settle and come back within 2 years....

It's not an easy place to live at all.

The US however we found great - yes there is some initial hassles, like needing a deposit for everything, and the joys of getting a driving license and SSN (dealings with US Govt officials tend to be a painful experience!). But after that we found it a great experience and loved the 9 years we were there - unfortunately the company I was working for was hit by the GFC and I found myself looking for something else - Oz seemed such a good idea at the time, right until we got there and found what it was really like!

What are the posts out there, what are they doing?

That can't be discussed on here Duff, the best anyone can do from here is kind of generalise.

More slots coming in the New Year too. I'm in the Cpl slot at the moment but that one is getting downgraded to SAC when I leave, a knock on from the Navy PO getting downgraded too.

Could you kind of generalise, what you do?

At a guess, I would say Information Management, and Tech Support, etc. Normal TG4 stuff really

ScoobTech said it really. Nothing out of the ordinary from regular TG4 stuff. More Comms than Tech because our kit is managed service. Couple of systems that are rarer for us, but nothing that will push your boundries.

It's hot in the summer though, if that helps.

Lingus... Nice to see nothing too drastic has changed! How'd you survive the tornado this weekend? Hows the family?!

From what I'm reading on here I'm only getting the married persons side of things. What about the single man such as myself?

Montana, if you're actually single then go for it, the lads are great and always up to something. But if you've got a girlfriend at home, from experience either go single or dont go!

The inital outlay is alot, but the advance and allowances are a massive help. And you're on so much money out there that it's not a too much of a problem, I seem to remember my wages nearly doubled (with the exchange rate as well!).

For single girls, as I believe there still arent any? (I was the only one!!) It's hard! Especially with a disfunctional relationship!!!

Tidy stuff. Are there any football teams there that i could join? How many RAF people are there there? Do you get to mix much with the Americano's?

The guys started one and were playing against the americans on unit quite regularly. I seem to remember it getting more and more popular as I was leaving (a year ago)

It did, now seems to fading.
Lots of golf though, if you like golf, I like golf and play a lot of golf.

Yeah we are doing fine thanks. Ever growing, you know how it is. That is one word of warning, the TV over here is crap. My family has increased at a nearly unstoppable rate since being here because there is bugger all on tele.

Don't rely on the rates to get you started over here though, we have just taken a hit in the pay review and a few people are hurting from it. Obviously for any new arrival it is money you haven't had so won't miss, but it may well affect the way you pay back an advance.

As for golf. I have now found that my handicap is no longer the fact that I pick up clubs, so that is a bonus.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Yeah all of you popping them out like reproduction was going out of fashion I remember!!!

Seen the photos, the new addition looks like a corker. But I've not got a proper internet connection in the block at the mo so no chatting! Oh for the days of FB in work hey?!
