Nov 07 Chf Clk's bulletin informing SAC's in several trades (including TG17) the opportunity to sign onto 22, with a pension.

Is this a good thing or is it ACOS Manning trying plug the leaks to enable the ship to stay afloat?

Its certainly not a new thing - I can remember a few hairy ar5ed SACs back in the 70's - all waiting to go on their pensions...

Have you got a list of all the trades?

Not sure if its a good thing or not - but I'm guessing there won't be too many takers (except the people who can't hack it in Civvy street I would guess..)

Interesting though, coupled with the extension of service offered last month...

DATED 12 NOV 07
NEWS FROM MANNING

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SACs AND JNR TECHs TO EXTEND TO 22 YEARS SERVICE

Sponsor: Manning 22 95471 6674

1. Following a review of manpower requirements, opportunities are now open for Jnr Techs and SACs in the following trades to extend to a pensionable 22-year engagement:

A Tech (M) and A Tech (AV) (plus personnel in single skilled trades provided they complete multi skilling assimilation training)
Eng Tech W
W Tech
Gen Tech(M)
MT Tech
Gen Tech(E)
MTD
RAFP
Gnr
FFtr
FOA
SE Fitt
Med Asst
Pers Admin
Supplr
Movs Cont
Std
Musn

2. There is no need for personnel to apply to sign on for 22 years service as everyone who satisfies the following eligibility criteria will be considered by a Further Service Board that will be held later this year:

a. Have completed at least 9 years reckonable service (as defined in AP 3392 Vol 2 Leaflet 501 Para 12).

b. Considered suitable in all respects.

c. Medically fit, normally not below A4G2Z1, for the duties of the trade and have not been referred for specialist medical review; cases where a G2 limitation may inhibit further service will be identified by Manning 23.

d. Free of personal or domestic circumstances which would prevent them from meeting their full Service obligations.

e. Not subject of any outstanding disciplinary matters or Formal Warning.

f. Minimum Overall Performance in Appointment score of 3 on the latest appraisal report.

3. Offers of re-engagement will be issued to individuals as soon as possible after the Board is completed.

Another finger tries to plug a huge leak that has sprung in the already shaky and sieve like dyke.

Do we really want 40 year old SACs as the norm?

Why don't they just increase the promotion rates therefore the better SAC's get promoted and get offered 22 years anyway.

Most that PVR do so because they are switched on and can get a job outside. We should be doing more to encourage high calibre individuals to complete the time they've already signed on for rather than encourage those that are left to stay.

Bring back pay band 3 for real techies, that would be a start!

Ask yourself one question......who will this benefit?

It will only benefit the RAF.

If everyone said No and asked the question about a retention bonus along the lines of Pilots etc, would they pay it out...I think not. It is another quick fix that will only save the Airships pensions as they can again paper over the real cracks!!!

It's worth a try. Maybe if we didn't sign on they'd at least be a bit more creative in encouraging us to stay in.

And yet again the idiots at the top come in with a SOOPAH idea to plug the gap of people disappearing from the RAF faster than white powder up Kate Moss's nose...

I really despise the fact that while the army and RN ensure their people leave after 22 at least as a sgt/PO, we still have bloody good lads and lasses leaving as cpls or worse.

Funny how as an orificer you get time promotion to Flt Lt. I know a few who are at least 3 ranks over-promoted...

::P:

SAC's dont want to 9 years these days, why will they do 22???

Its about time they booted out a few more seniors to free up the ranks. Too many chiefs and above doing jobs a cpl/sgt could do.

I think the whole RAF needs a damned good shake up in this respect. Mission creep I believe is what they call it.

I remember the days when sgts and chiefs wore overalls...........:PDT_Xtremez_15:

Jesus what section do you work on????

Up at ISK EVERY Sgt wears denims and the majority of chiefs do too, can I come and work at your place.

Can I come work at yours??!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:
The most green our lot wear is a green fleece over their blues when its a bit cold for em!
Mind you, this is the Cornish Airforce!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Just one little observation. This list almost exactly matches the list of pinch point trades. No prizes for guessing why.

Sums it up quite nicely. The RAF doesn't appear to offer anything for me, disillusioned after 5 years. I'm doing my original engagement and getting out.

If you've had enough after five years, why are you staying around for another four? Seems a little strange to me.

To a) finish my Engineering degree b) Gain some more experience (I doubt 4 years of actual engineering experience will suffice) and c) Save some cash so I can actually afford to buy a house when I leave.

I wouldn't ever expect to PVR, I signed for 9 so I'm doing 9.

I signed on to 22 as an SAC approaching my 15 year point. I had an interview with the Chief Clerk with the same worries? Would I end up a 22 year SAC etc. He advised that it was an opportunity for people in trades notorious for promotion difficulties to get picked up, which I did in the next reporting period. I do however know of one individual who signed on and only got promoted at the 19 year point. I would say you need to consider if you are "knocking on the door" before setting yourself up for years of waiting! Hope this helps a little
