What is a good Secondary Duty. JNCO IC Block is not what I'm looking for.
I would like one that has feck all to do with the RAF.

Any advice please.

Firstly, look to things you enjoy doing and see if anything fits. Doing a secondary duty just to get the tick in the box may end up being more of a drag than it should be.

That said, one of my lads is a conflict resolution manager and low ropes instructor. Both duties that he has fun with and gets him lots of praise from officers around the unit.

That was going to be my question "What on earth is a conflict resolution manager? I have a vision of some bloke in a stripey jumper with a whistle stood in tool stores going "Right you both want the liney kit so last one standing gets it"

Its mediation. You get put on a list and can be called upon to go to another unit where two individuals have requested mediation. All done in civvies. The 2 parties dont even get to know what rank you are as a mediator.

Its a 5 day course - see your P1 staff for details.

And its also very transferrable!

I know that you have said you don't want anything to do with the RAF but, have you looked into being a SSAFA volunteer?? As an inservice volunteer you are asked to help families/dependents of serving or ex serving peeps.... It can be anything from helping an old boy with some DIY. To helping out someone who is housebound by walking their dog for them to helping with a family that has been bereaved... You are fully trained by SSAFA for this type of work and of course vetted.... Its a great way of helping others and is varied..... You can give as much or as little time as ou wish http://www.ssafa.org.uk/volunteering.html its worth a look :)

I'm liking it so far.

I'd echo TMG's suggestion of finding something that you enjoy doing.

It makes any secondary duty bearable knowing that it is something that you enjoy doing...:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I would echo this too. If you are going to volunteer to do something over and above your job, then you have to "buy into it" 100%. Doing something just for the sake of it looking good on your assessment will be more trouble than its worth - you'll hate doing it and end up resenting whatever it is you do.

I've never done a secondary duty for the sake of it, but I've done many that I have truly believed in, and every single one I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I found RAFALO to be rewarding, having a laugh with the old boys and girls and maintaining that link with the RAF. I also did QM for the local scouts when Master Stax was a member.

If you are doing secondary duties to get promoted then you are doing them for the wrong reasons.

I think that the mediation thing should be realistically considered to be an associated duty rather than a secondary duty but I would strongly recommend you do it if you can to rapidly increase your management abilities, of course you need to be the right kind of person to make a good stab of it. If your a JNCO then it starts with the E&D stuff then moves on a bit.

As others have said when it comes to secondary duties choose something you enjoy, even now as an ex-service individual I'm on the PTA and deputy sports club manager as I think it's all about putting something back for what you may want to take out.

Thanks for the advice. I've just started a new posting and I thinking a fresh start fresh outlook on life and give something back to the community. All taken on board TVM.

The RAF also run a mentoring scheme, it is run by the Generic Education and Training Centre (GETC) who are a lodger Unit at Cranwell. Your TDF should be able to give you more info but basically you sign up for the system and complete a training course. You then say what Ranks, Trades and Branches you are willing to mentor and if you are matched by someone then you could become their mentor.

Obviously the sytem is also open to anyone out their that feels they could do with an outside perspective on their leadership and management skills as well. It's a system that the RAF are keen to make work and isn't particularly well known yet. You could also have a look on the GETC website for more info if you don't want to go straight to your TDO, I found it through the Cranwell site.

To complete at least part of your course you will need to access your PMD(Air) account. This account was set up for you this year and is similar to the DLP but is RAF specific. I think their are links to it off of the DLP page or again you could look for them on the GETC page.

If your looking for something to get you promoted perhaps being mentored is the way to go?

I always found being either an ACLO or DACLO was very high profile and very rewarding. Not only was it good for the SJAR, but you got to help some kids get a beter view of the RAF. On a wider note - it also got my face known about the sections on camp and made things a lot easier when you went round with a packet of biscuits when you were after a favour.

5 days to tell them to man up?

Have done the DACLO thing for a few years - as the ACLO was OOA last summer effectively I did his job for the summer camp season. Goes onto SJAR very easily...

The RAF mentoring scheme cannot be put onto your SJAR so if you're after promotion points then it's not for you, but if you want to brush up on listening skills etc then I'd recommend it.

Another one for you - TRiM practitioner. Same skill-set as mentoring, but applied in a different manner. And you can put that one on your SJAR. Look up the TRiM website (part of RAF Halton) for more gen.

You a member of any station clubs? A high profile part of a station club like IC/2IC/treasurer of the club fund is good. And obviously it'd be something you enjoy doing.
