SJAR and PSB's

I haven't been able to get on one of the SJAR courses, but I can honestly say, I've learnt more from this thread than I've learnt in all the time the SJAR has been in use.
 
I would highly recommend that all of you (that haven't done so already) fight to get on one of these courses.

I thought my SJAR's were in good order, read well and painted me in a good light... but I was always a B cat.

After attending the course, I realised that two of my SJAR's were so full of holes and contradictions from a previous RO that it would take a couple of years to 'fall off the radar' as it were. Admittedly there were also a couple of 'gaps' in the things that I had control over.

However, I was told my SJAR's were much improved over the previous two years and that I should expect to be on the board this year.

Unfortunately though, due to the redundancy board sitting a few weeks before the promotion board, they missed my most recent SJAR and only had two poor ones and one good one to look at. Hence, I'm now a civvy!

Yes and no. If you've been in post for several years and have RAF No Move then it could show that you have no desire to diversify and are content to stagnate in your current post. PSB's are more and more looking at individuals who can perform well in a number of specialisations of a trade and the No Move marker suggests that you don't want to move on. Use the comments boxes to explain and expand on your AOC and they may understand more why you want to stay where you are. Don't forget you can stay at the same location but move posts to display diversity in different roles. Trade/rank differences will apply.

I understand & agree with that completely.

I did receive this negative score on my SJAR in my first year of a 3 year tour at a secret Mediterranean base.

I expanded in my comments that I was over the moon with my posting & was content to stay in the sun.

Bit harsh of them to mark me down maybe?

I sat on a PSB end of last year and certainly your aspirations are available for the board to see.

If "RAF No Move" is a consideration and viewed as a negative, has that been disseminated? I'm not into second guessing PSB in a "well it's obvious because.." way.
 
It is being now, their should be at least one RO in a Section who's completed an SJAR course by now.
 
As you will have seen by my previous post, I am passionate about SJARs'. I take my responsibility as an RO very seriously. In fact, I believe that it is the most important role that I perform. I have personally ensured that my SNCOs' have attended RO workshops and the majority of my JNCOs' and SACs' have attended SJAR presentations carried out by the Unit Careers Advisor. Those that have not yet attended are ready to be nominated.

In my Sqn, the OC insists on seeing every 1st & 2nd RO narrative, (Written by Sgt/FS/WO/Flt Lt - No exceptions!) checks the Performance OPGs' and checks the Recommendations Summary. This ensures consistency throughout the reporting chain and timely completion of the reports across the rank spectrum.

A common mistake by ROs' is rank for future employment. If Promotion 1 Rank Up is No or Dev, then rank for future employment can only be in the substantive rank. If Promotion 1 Rank Up is Yes, High, Excp then rank for future employment is the rank above current rank.

With the SACs' just being completed, I have seen a number of Dev with next rank as Cpl. Once again, it is my responsibility as an RO to carry out OJT (On the Job Training) of my 1st RO's and proof read the reports before they go to the OC.

At the end of the day, if we truly value our team, then we must ensure that they deserve our time in return so that we produce honest and quality reports that truly reflect their performance over the reporting period. On that point, I have no hesitation in awarding a B- Dev No or C No No and then fully debriefing the subject to the reasons why. You must ensure that all subjects have had an MPAR otherwise you are leaving yourself open to a world of pain!
 
after attending a career brief and chatting to someone who sat on this years board my eyes were opened to several things with regards to sjars, the main thing i took was that everyone is getting better at writing them on the whole therefore the boards are getting tighter and tighter.

make sure your front page is a good one, it's the one area you write yourself, make sure your potential box isn't just used as a continuance of your narrative box and make sure your 2nd ro adds more information than repeating some of what the 1st ro said.

that said i still feel the system is flawed however as the air force won't change it anytime soon (and as i've pvr'd i don't really care if it does)

Yes, and everyone should be doing one. But if you have SJARs to write, and have been unable to be timetabled in for one beforehand, then it shouldn't be above the competence of a SNCO to ask a colleague who has for a brief overview. Or perhaps even proof read what's been written and ensure it matches intention.
 
Having done the SJAR course which I found extremely beneficial as other have already said, saw the other side after taking part in a promotion board and when you are reading so many SJARs with many having roughly the same duties you do have to look for the extras to see where someone stands how. RO's do now use lots of examples, but less tell how well the individual has performed whilst carrying out those duties.

A question for those that may know. When you have civvies as your 1st and 2nd RO's they are mandated (according to HRMS) to attend the SJAR course. What can you do though if the refuse to attend and does anyone check they have completed the course before they put them in to the reporting chain?

Apologies, I wasn’t clear. What I am saying is that considerations like "RAF No Move" should not be viewed by PSB negatively if it is not disseminated as policy in JSP757 or through other means. SJAR courses should only disseminate policy, and PSB should follow published policy so that we can all make informed career decisions. Anything else is hearsay and liable to inconsistency in reporting and PSB sessions.
