A little birdy has been telling me of new trick that Plod is pulling on motorists down here in the South East.

It works thus.

Step 1. Position a mobile speed camera van/marked police car in the usual manner to catch those nasty speeding motorists.

Step 2. Place an unmarked video equipped police car half a mile up the road on the opposite carriageway to catch the drivers flashing/warning those nasty speeding motorists about Step 1.

Step 3. Issue summons to drivers of headlight flashing cars 'for perverting the course of justice'.

Cunning fcukers eh?.:PDT_Xtremez_32:

You just take it to court and claim you were doing a functional test of your head lights inc full beam.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

I done fladh others to warn them coz i'm a selfish git! Serves them right i say!:PDT_Xtremez_43:

slightly Off Topic and i bet your one of those cnuts who does 50 mph in a 60 zone "because it's safer" then without a care in the world enters a 40 mph area at ? you've guessed it 50 :PDT_Xtremez_32: Off Topic

especially as they are supposed to be 'safety cameras'. dont they have rapist or immigrants to catch or somethingwanker

I have nothing to worry about, because I can't even flash people with my motor! :PDT_Xtremez_17:

Its not just the speed cameras to watch out for. Keep your eyes open for the so called red light cameras. they will snap you on green if you are over the speed limit.
I know 'cos I've just been awarded 3 points on my license which has been clean for 40 years.

Dual carriageway, green light, 38mph.
It was a thirty limit. dhoh!!!
Serves me right.:PDT_Xtremez_42:

I don't think I'd like to be fladh by him:PDT_Xtremez_19: either................

Bear in mind that flashing your headlights is simply an action to warn other road users of your presence; so if, for instance, you thought an oncoming vehicle was about to encroach on your path, flashing your headlights (which is much more effective than using your horn where oncoming vehicles are concerned...) along with taking evasive/avoiding action, is indeed what any self-respecting motorist would do...

I remember when I was learning to drive being told that flashing headlights is not a recognised signal because it is used for a variety of reasons and you can never be sure which is the signal being sent nor even if it is directed at you.

It would be a very difficult charge to make stick and can think of a few excuses should I get caught out: "I was saying hello to a mate", "I was allowing another driver into my lane", "I was warning another driver of my presence", etc.

Hell, I got a fixed penalty notice a few years ago for driving down a road that was for buses only (it was an open road the last time I had used it). Several people flashed their lights at me but I didn't twig and drove over a bridge into the waiting arms of a very irate copper.

Truth be told, I am a stickler for speed limits except when on the motorway (70mph is too restrictive when you're on the same road for 4 hours, I like the German way) and I am happy for speeders to get their just desserts.

Agreed, TBJ - Speeders should indeed get their just deserts, especially in built-up areas.

As for the flashing of headlights, however, this IS a recognised signal, which is given simply to warn other motorists of your presence - especially during silent hours, when use of the horn is illegal. Obviously, it can be misconstrued as an invitation/greeting as opposed to a warning, so if, for instance, you were to pull out of a junction when someone appears to have 'flashed you out' & it all goes wrong - expect to receive 100% of the blame...

:S

Gents, flashing your headlamps to warn other road users that the Police are upahead could be seen as obstructing Police or perverting the course of justice, it would be a complete jobsworth to make that one stick though.

Numerous years ago I heard of people being pulled by the plods for flashing lights as a warning of speed traps, but never saw or heard of anyone being charged with it. Maybe the coppers think if they tell off enough people word will get around and motorists will stop warning other motorists, that way they'll get more dosh in their coffers:PDT_Xtremez_25:

I passed a plod near Marham last week pointing his 'hair-drier' at cars coming towards me, and I didnt think twice about warning oncoming cars...except for the white van men and local tradesmen who are the bane of all!:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Correct me if i am wrong here but, All cameras have to be marked and visible and not to forget signposted.

This being the case are not the Police breaking this law/guideline by placing a camera in an unmarked car to entrap unsuspecting motorists.

Speed camera vans have to be marked, and the roads along which they are likely to be operating have to be signed as such. As far as I'm aware there's nothing to stop the use of an unmarked vehicle for other purposes; the van containing the camera to look out for 'flashers' is technically not a speed trap van is it?

And police have done people for warning others of speed traps. A pensioner and a cyclist in Crawley got done.

Unlike in Germany, where the police pretend to be broken down in an unmarked car, with a camera pointing out the back window.

Nearly got me a couple of times - but luckily I wasn't going too fast.

Get caught in a built up area then you get what you deserve!

Personally I would love to get rid of the speed limit on Motorways but then again would you ever get over 30 Mph on somewhere like the M6 :)
