As old as the Puma in one of the pictures!

Great pictures Tashy, what year were they taken? Are we talking end of the Lightning era?

Brought back memories of having the ****e scared out of me as a child by those things at Binbrook!

Too damned noisy, especially when being scrambled in the early hours! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Oh fantastic a super picture of a light blue Montego how super:PDT_Xtremez_15:

Brings back memories of nearly having both eardrums burst when a pair took off as I exited the PAR I'd just serviced - ouch! And to think, they'd still be the fastest intercepters in the world if they were still in service! (Or so it's been said - is this true?)

Ping

Talking of the Puma have a close up that comming later......

Most were taken during the Last Binrook airshow in 87 and the last XI sqn reunion (as lightnings)......but some some would have been during normal days so could be anytime between 85 - 88.

The weather looks about right for the "Last last Lightning event" at Binbrook on the bump late 80's when it p!ssed down all day. Remember the voice over tannoy bod getting quite emotional and animated as the last lightnings did their thing only to change to totally bored as a Tonka did it's display "Oh yes and next one of our new mud movers enjoy" are something similar. Nice piccies Tashy memories.

Bravo Lima is a Chinny now isn't it ? :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Nice pics Tashy.... that first one would make a nice desktop wallpaper ! er, I mean it's very artistic with the colour of the sky and stuff :PDT_Xtremez_42: :PDT_Xtremez_15:

Tashy, did you ever work on an all metal finish Lightning? I only ask because I wonder often who got dicked for shining the old girls up, it seems a never ending battle with the museums F53, even with frequent maintenance pitting of the metal still occurs....

No i didn't but i do have a couple of piccies (comming soon) of a Bae jet that was a "metal" jet that landed U/S at Binbrook.

Ringshall primary School summer holidays 1970

Ringshall primary School summer holidays 1970

I have just remembered this one perfect moment from childhood. Wattisham airfield, possibly 111 Sqn. The pilot in question was, I believe, Squadron leader Pengelli (deceased).
Clear blue sky, not a cloud to be seen. The Lightning roars down the runway, lifts her nose, stows her gear and then tips her nose to the stars. She slides down the runway like a kid on a snowboard coming to a halt almost in front of us. You can feel the power of the engines throbbing through your ribs while she hangs there, shuddering at the end of the runway.
The combined effect of the heat and power of the engines buckle the tarmac, then she starts to climb faster and faster until within seconds she's gone with only the ringing in our ears to prove she was ever there at all.

One crash gate, 3 schoolfriends, one shared expression. :PDT_Xtremez_17: Wow.

I will ask my dad about the all metal polishing!! He worked on them in Tabuk. Wonder if they still have the lightnings on one of the roundabouts in Tabuk??
