Tashies Piccies...

You can tell its a really early picture as the Puma hasn't got any "Dustbin Lids" bolted to the "PiPs" (Air Intakes to the uneducated)::P:

Talking of the Puma have a close up that comming later......

Most were taken during the Last Binrook airshow in 87 and the last XI sqn reunion (as lightnings)......but some some would have been during normal days so could be anytime between 85 - 88.

Ah yes, the airshow that inspired me to join up.:PDT_Xtremez_26:

Sweet piccies Tashy, cleaning the intake of the Lightning is an absolute tw@t (we kept it clean before the installation of the engines). Its cramped as well.

As an aisde, for any ex Lightning riggers - fook me that canopy is heavy!

And to think, they'd still be the fastest intercepters in the world if they were still in service! (Or so it's been said - is this true?)

Ping

Nope, the Mig 25 holds that record for an in service aircraft. Lockheed YF-12 (Interceptor version of the SR-71 Blackbird) would have most likely held it had it had gone into production. Nice photos by the way Tashy.

Bin lids became permanent fit in the late nineties after the French had problems with the moving parts icing up so they wouldn't operate when required. Bit of a pointless decision, as IIRC, the part in question isn't fitted on the HC1s and it has an adverse effect on flight duration.

The Puma must have been one of the very first with PIPs fitted, as my old chief spent the first few weeks of GW1 building PIPs to send out.

Sort of Off Topic did anybody see 'Earth' on BBC2, Tuesday at 9PM this week??

If it is repeated it is well worth a watch, as they were filming in a Lightning in South Africa going to the outer reaches of the atmosphere.

I caught it last night MC, definately made for some interesting viewing.

Obviously, being a youngster, Lightnings were before my time, so nice to get an ide what all the fuss was about.

Tashy Was you there when they flew 2 Lightnings down the pan and did a touch n go? Got a few awesome pics of them on the last day

Question Time 29/11/07

Question Time 29/11/07

Didn't want to start a new thread on this because it releates to a Lightning.

Did anyone see Question Time last night being hosted at Elvington, York ? Must have missed most of the prog as was too busy trying catch glimpses of the Lightning on the left hand side.

was more interested in Friday the 13th, the Halifax behind the stage.

OK still on the lightening theme, anyone else catch that Planet Earth Documentary on BBC1 last night just before Top Gear, presenter took a flight in a metal polished Lightening. Was some really great footage.

A lightning at Bruntingthorpe

A lightning at Bruntingthorpe

Spring 2004 was a good time to re-acquaint myself with some serious jet noise. This was one of the two Lightnings they had taxying down the runway:-
