Going somewhat off thread, I remember my 2* boss coming back from the STC Command Board just after the first JPA salary payment went into everyones bank accounts, he was laughing about an SAC who had been paid £110K that month. He said they'd asked him to pay it back, however if the SAC had any sense he'd pay it back at 4 days pay a month... Obe of our 1* Admin officers confirmed the story a few days later.

Last Time I worked in General Office (before PSF)

....Gate Counts, ESI Kardex, visible index strips that kept falling out of the Kardex, paying cash to the YTS youngsters, manual IRCs, PRCs and F280s....happy days.

Happy Days indeed, although cash pay parades for all were even better. Why did we ever get rid of GCIs - they were a godsend as pay could always be sorted manually in the current month regardless of what the pay statement (F6666?) said - after all it was only a piece of paper and it caught up eventually! And the black spots on the kardex - once had to explain to pre-AOCs (yes that is correct, before everthing went PC) inspection team that they were ex-overseas...!!

Most vivid image was of first tour in General Office at Kinloss knee deep in leave passes and cancellations for the 1973 Christmas Grant - darned thing changed about 3 times because of the power cuts - and in those days that meant forms, forms, forms - nobody went on leave without a leave pass. Good beer calls in the office (barrels of beer - couldn't see that nowadays) on a Fri afternoon. Compare and contrast to subsequent tour in PSF as WO with 25 years in between and the advent of JPA - nuff said.
