The Use of Acting Rank

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
There seems no reason to give the rank as there are no supervisory/discipline reasons etc

SUPA is sufficient.

:PDT_Xtremez_14:

This is just a statement of facts and is unlikely to win buy in from the individual or his manager.

Cpl X has the potential for advancement, as was clearly demonstrated when they stood in for their absent SNCO for 3 months of this reporting period. Although not awarded A/Sgt rank due to a lack of subordinates, there was no drop in the level of service provided by the office.

In the first example, the RO will have to give a specific example as to how the individual performed in the higher rank, which will be ranked against how other personnel of that rank & trade carried out their A/rank duties. I feel that this is where they will shoot themselves in the foot, as there will be no SNCO supervision and JNCO development going on in that section.

This the buy in that needs to be sold to get the best long term outcome for all, rather than a short term sugar rush.

Many apologies for agreeing with you MWD, won't do it again

These are the facts and my opinion. I didn't realise my response would be marked by you but thanks for the feedback.

Personally I don't really care about 'buy-in' the fact is that there seems no reason to give individual acting rank iaw the AP.

Granted that the SJAR bit MWD gives could indeed 'sell it' to them but the fact remains if there are no supervisory/discipline reasons then just give them SUPA. If that's alright with you.

As a JNCO on one Unit I would do the exact same job as a SNCO (who would have no subordinates) on another Unit.

So the rationale for giving acting rank would deem that my trade would have very little requirement for anyone to be promoted.

Sounds silly doesnt it.

No Sniffer, I'm guessing that the rank establishment for your particular trade is determined by the number of personnel at the unit, where the larger the figure, the higher the rank of the one individual.

MWD,

I agree there is no need for acting rank. Personally I would feel it a bit of a comedown.

If there's no need for him to be a SNCO and he's the only one reported on by his SNCO to me it just begs the question, "Why is there a SNCO there in the first place and not another JNCO?" especially if there is deemed no requirement at the moment and no justification for it.

That's another story! The section, IMHO, should be 1 x Cpl and 1 x SAC and 1 x Civ, but the establishment says that its a Sgt instead of an SAC, so a Sgt usually sits in there.

Mutty

there is no legislative requirement to award the rank. However whilst there may be no disciplinary or supervisory rationale there may be a case if the individual's interaction outwith the section would benefit a higher rank. Having said that it sounds like the section released the Sgt without much thought or were trying to do the Cpl a favour!
