Seems there's a stress testing major desk top exercise underway in "can we" should a really big conflict occur.

"The Ministry of Defence is war-gaming a major conflict to "stress-test" supplies of ammunition and equipment in a war time scenario. The MoD says it is the first war games to involve representatives of the defence industry – alongside military commanders and officials. The week-long exercise began on Monday morning and is taking place at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire."

So can we hack it these days??

They had a reset mid-afternoon.

They lost the dice.

I thought it had already been widely reported that in a full on shooting match we would be out of ammunition in a few days with industry needing years to restock. In fact wasn't this highlighted with everyone supplying Ukraine?

With the current rate of decline in the British Military, I'm not sure we could actually leave the country. There used to be some paper/doctrine that we should be able to fight 1 x major conflict and 2 x minor conflicts or 2 x Major and nothing else . I can't for the love of me remember that place i was informed on it. But based on current levels there is no way we can actually mount anything significant. To give some context, on Op BILOXI 2024 there was approximately 224 personnel deployed and 20 were reservists!!!!!!! that is 10% (give or take). I know for a fact the reserves were offered a lot more positions but could not fill them.

We lost the Herc's and that capability has not been filled or likely to be regained, we are due to retire 30 Tranche 1 Typhoons with no foreseeable replacement (F35, GCAP or addition new Typhoon). At what point do we become ineffective?

I recall that doctrine as well.... I think it has long gone as capabilities have been eroded or erased.

The wargaming seems to be a rehash of the Ex Wintex-Cimex series of paper exercises (sometimes including actual ground and air play) that ran in the 80's and, possibly 90s.

Seems like we can put on a good parade and stick a few bods outside various establishments wearing furry hats, and thats about it.

Apparently not only would we run quickly out of bullets but in a properly short time we'd also run out of bods.

My suspicion is that these assessments are broadly correct, so my question is, if these are a minister's views, then what is the government going to do to address the issue?

I don't think national service as was is the right model, but redesigning the forces to be appealing to large numbers of people to want to join and serve for a few years then transfer into the strategic reserve is broadly something I would support.

A large pool of people with basic training and skills that are available to be called up in the event of major conflict. Throw in a refresher weekend (or longer) every couple of years for 10 years after leaving and it would keep the basic skills in memory.

Well, if our present PM is anything to go by the responses will be:
1. Blame the previous government.
2. Blame BREXIT.
3. Organise a committee to brains storm the problem.
4. Dither about until it's too late.
5. Cover it up and if that fails lie about the whole thing.

1. Previous governments have all had opportunity to make positive changes but didn't. They should be happy to own the outcome of their decisions.
2. See point 1.
3. Better than sticking head in the sand and hoping the problem goes away.
4. Yes, the last bunch were such fantasticly prompt decision makers 🤔
5. I'm starting to think you missed the election and don't know the Tories aren't running the show anymore.

Unusually, CDS has stepped up and while he has not openly been controversial he has said about GDP needs to be stepped up for defence spending and a date needs to be set for 2.5%.

No, I didn't miss the election, but I might as well have. Strangler and his bunch of fools are just as bad as Sunak and Co, the only difference is the colour of the rosette
