What do you go on to do after the RAF?

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Did my time, had a difference of interpretation with the Resettlement Clerk about what the future held, got pensioned off, walked into a Stockbroker's in Canary Wharf and got qualified as a Stockbroker. Established my own private client IFA Practice a bit later, specialising in the RAF community, serving or retired and whatever their rank - and thats what I do now.

Life is good; the clients are nicer than most civvies and if I am at a unit for more than a day, I am boarded in the Mess. Odiham and Kinloss next week, so I travel just as much too.
OK hows about listing the top 5 things to do with a spare £50K that might be doing next to nothing where it is now?

Don't bother including birds and booze I've got that covered:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I think you'll find you have to pay for that kind of advice.

12 years as an Armorer so I naturally went into Telecommunications as a trade, first working as an Installer for CableTel (later NTL & Virgin) & then as a Service Engineer, that was 98 to 2006,& then after redundency I went to Sky as an Engineer. After that it's been dead end jobs in call centers & I'm now out of work due to me leaving a Telesales job last year to start a new job after my holidays, that fell thru.
I do have a new job tho,I'm just waiting on a start date.I'm looking at going self employed doing Telecomms stuff like Sky & Aerial installs however I need money to buy the expensive tools I need &,in this financial climate,I'd rather buy outright than rely on loans/grants ect.

Happy to give information. If I give advice though, and not information, there would be a compliancy and audit trail as long as your arm, and time is money. ;-)

Hu Jardon,

You have loads of options. Work out your attitude, threshold and capacity for risk. It'd also depend if you were married, have kids, what your age is, what sort of job you have, when you wanted to retire etc etc.

Consider a personal pension for either yourself or the other half (if there is one). If you are not risk averse and want tax relief and the chance for good growth, consider Venture Capital Trusts and/or Enterprise Investment Schemes. Of course, use your ISA (consider treating cash ISAs like the plague!!) allowance (get in quick fo this year).

A personal financial plan should be like a battlegroup or EAW. Too many stackers and not enough chefs, and people have blankets - but no food. Too many Rocks and not enough techies, and you have superbly over defended U/S aircraft. So, get covered in all areas and consider all timelines.

Its all about you though; one size doesn't fit all. If you want a steer, just drop drop me a PM or an e-mail (advice@). Glad to offer as much free info as you might need in the time I have.

PS: Remember, if its in a cash ISA and earning 0%, you're losing about 5% pa in value.

I was never much good at sticking with things, even when I was in the mob. Before I left, I did Appo, Techy, MU Supply, MTO, Movements. Then I left, and lost all that singular sense of drive and focus.

Did unemployment (over-rated) Cycle Courier (tiresome), Bouncer in a swimming pool (don't laugh, you need them in Edinburgh), Airline Passenger Services Manager (disaster - I hate people), all before launching my massive inexperience and oversized ego into the Air Express Industry, where I did a load of stuff operations related (mostly about planes).

I have bounced around the industry since in mostly Strategic distribution operations jobs, landed a few important quals and post-nominals, and have a nice niche now where I learn a great deal and tell people only what they need to know. Do this, and you attain a certain irreplaceability value - and that's what it is all about.

Went to Saudi with BAE. Just like the RAF but civvie - really wish people could have left their past ranks behind as it always seemed to be a ****ing contest about who was senior.

FFS - we're in civvie street now! The ex officers were the worst!

Now work in the Public sector as a web developer! Get the technology to do the work for you!

Unless I wake up one morning and decide to sack me'sen.

If that happens John don't fcuking take it lying down...........................take yer self to an industrial tribunal for unfair dismissal.:PDT_Xtremez_14:
