  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I don't need to justify why I'm buying this , so please if you have no constructive advise, then don't bother . Cheers
Oh dear someones tired

Hope that helps

PS you should ask Sausage 2 and a half he's much quicker than that other bloke who goes to France a lot

Hope that helps

Oh yeah get a Bekker 7834 with traffic assist, it's got street level mapping of the whole of Europe (not just Major Roads) so you won't find yourself "Lost in France" - It got GEM to some really wierd places in Butt **** America after one of his mates fine tuned it:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Nice one, advertising a discontinued product.

Face facts, it's the 21st century. We don't need to navigate using pulped wood and dyes any more.

Get with it grandad. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Come the revolution brother (or the digital meltdown) maps is what people will need.

S2, personally I found the TomTom easiest to use, and the doris can operate it.

Got a TomTom original. Very good. Shows hotels, petrol stations, places of interest etc., will navigate you around slow traffic etc. You can get European map updates on-line or get them free I think with the newer models.
Heard some stories about Garmin being 5hit, but can't substantiate that personally.

Currently a 2 car 2 tomtom family and whilst I have on occasion used the Garmin ones with which I was not too familiar, I have never had a problem with them.

Even my wife can use them so they are certified easy to use as far as I'm concerned.

I've got a Garmin and it's cracking news. It's a different model to yours, but boy do I need it. My eyes are deteriorating too much to read a map and I can only concentrate on one bloody thing at a time. Do yourself a favour though; turn the birds voice off completely...she'll do your nut in, and get a screen cleaner for it...Monster ScreenClean - available from Comet and other high street money magnets.

Recalculating, recalculating, recalculating, recalculating.....................

Have you considered a Navigon PNA 6000T or maybe a 7000T?

I bought 40 of these units for work about 2 years ago and they're great throughout both NW and NE Europe!

Also, TMC (Traffic Management Channel) is built-in and free, so any traffic updates given via FM signal are with you in no time!

Also, if you haven't already made up your mind, have a look at this website:

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

The reviews are excellent and their free 'Speed Camera Database' is about the most up to date and comprehensive one availible.

Has anyone tried running this on their mobile phone?

I've been running it on my BlackBerry Pearl and it runs a treat. Occasionally it throws a wobbly, but brings you back on track quick enough.

The big advantage with this is cost which is subscription based and also the fact that maps are loaded onto your phone directly over GPRS and therefore always up to date with the usual POIs, camera info and best of all traffic hotspots.

Certainly for the cost, its worth a go. You can also a 14 day free trial.

Top tip though, make sure you are on data package

Just moved back to the UK after 3 years in Cyprus, bought a TomTom 530 immediately and I can honestly say it's the best £170 I've ever spent. It worked perfectly straight out of the box and didn't require me to plug it into my pc or anything.

Very easy to understand interface, very clear and concise directions, and pretty accurate with a very big database of post codes and addresses.

One thing to warn you about though, when you've been using it for a few weeks or months and have added many of your own Favourites or POIs, the TomTom Home software completely wipes them from the device when you update the maps or sowtware on the device, so always them up first (again, through the TomTom Home software)

the next model up to mine is the 730 and this has European maps

This is one of the drawbacks of the TomTom devices; the TTHome software is buggy and awkward to use. When I first got mine it came with V1.6 of the program which I had to upgrade to V2.1 and it wouldn't recognise my device. Only when V2.2 came out could I use it again.
I updated my maps a few weeks back and the device itself wouldn't boot, I had to do a hard reset whereafter it worked again.
Thats said, now its working its fine. I was a real sceptic of them when they first came out, just another toy for the got-to-have-it gadget geeks I thought. But mine came into its own last Sunday when, on a journey back from Preston, the feds shut the M6 at J19 and just turfed everyone out onto the local roads. I had a rough idea which way to go, but the Satnav lead me across country bypassing all the other souls driving this way and that looking for another route.

I travelled to Holyhead from Odiham a few weeks ago and there was an accident on the M6 northbound, I clicked on the tom tom to avoid the M6 just as the traffic started getting unbearable and it took me off into the back of beyond, only to get me to my destination earlier than it first estimated!!! Spot on!!

Another good thing is the IQ Routes feature, where it uses average traffic speeds along the route and time of day into consideration when planning your route. It brought me back to Odiham a completely different way because it was late at night, and took even less time to get home.
