Which Aircraft?

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Can anybody guess which RAF aircraft has seen service in every conflict since 1968 and is not represented in any UK museum?

Is it not about time for one to be displayed at Cosford/Hendon/Duxford?

Jimps

So JPP are you going to put us out of our misery and tell which A/C it is ?

But that's only HALF a helicopter !! and BN is still in service.

I don't think you will find a RAF Wokka in any museum soon, they are too damm useful. Yes ZA718 is still in operational service, though it has not always been coded 'BN' (Its full service history was in a spotters mag in the middle of the year). It's coded BN now and will be for evermore and if it dosen't end up at Hendon or Cosford I will be very surprised.

The De Havilland Heritage centre just off J22 on the M25 had two and 'a half' mozzies last time I was there.

It will be three when they finish restoring the Mk VI fighter-bomber. The other two are a Mk 35 bomber and the orignal mossie prototype. Duxford has a mossie bomber as well, plus there are a couple in the USA and a NF30 nightfighter in a musuem in Belguim.

Mossies

Mossies

Theres one in York in the Elvington Museum....(apparently..cough .cough) some bloke in the pub told me honest-

Same deal as for the Spey powered Phantoms from the sound of it.

I think part of the deal with the F4 was that we had to either scrap them or give the yanks first dibs on having them back to stop us flogging them on to somebody who may end up usibg them against the cousins. I believe the MOD had to ask permission from the DoD for every aircraft that is preserved. This possibly stretches to every American aircraft we have preserved here.

DOH !! A I'm an Armourer B I'm an............... J your Jealous hehe

Cosford

Cosford

There is a BELFAST at Cosford, if you squint and rub vaseline in your eyes it looks a bit like a herc.
Think there is a mosquito and a canberra there too.

Visited the new exhibition and was nice to walk under the V bombers but would have been nice to get a bit higher up to see them a bit clearer.

Jimps- just nick one of the ones from bays 2 and 3, they aren't going anywhere fast! one could go to the museums, and the other could replace the comet as gate guard and the engineers can have a bar in it (striclty no scribbleys!)!

Hiya Shouty!

The gate guard thing was explored when the buy back started but was deemed unviable for some reason.

Don't even get me started on the Comet. 'Saggy' is the last complete surviving C2 version of the aircraft anywhere in the world and it would be a crying shame to see it consigned to the scrapmans torch. I did a lot of digging on it about three years ago and the DeHavilland Museum are keen to get it across to them for care and preservation. However the Department who deal with Gate Guardians/Disposals were fairly ambivalent when the museum approached them. AFIK they are hanging fire until closer to the closure date of Lyneham to make any more attempts.

She is in fairly good nick although the ravages of time and weather have been a bit unkind to the old girl. Internally she is reasonably sound but the floor is unsafe in places.

IMHO it would be a very good project for a good looking blonde sumpyess, based at Lyneham to take on the care of the old lady. Any ideas of a likely candidate Shouty????????

Jimps

Umm one does spring into mind, i'll ask her next time i see her... lol

who would we have to talk to to look after saggy? or at least clean her (and fit a bar in there) maybe we should have a herc too...

When i was at Lyn back in 88 - 90 there were a few people who turned up to robb bits off the comet. Have no idea who/why (too long ago if i did know at the time) but it did always look good as a gate guard.

Crack on.............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Well it could have been from Boscombe as they still had a Comet then,I suspect waste of space are waiting to steal the frame to convert to mra4arce.

As for looking good as a Gate Guard I heard that the then Staish decided that it was better than teh camp getting a swimming pool?? any truth in that?

And I remember my Sooty Snec Guard commander not having the heart to penalise a young lad in on jankers for attempting to De blank the Comet one night, so he got sent back to the block early :PDT_Xtremez_28:

I' have heard that too - I know that LYE did have a pool at one time but if it was cost of pool v cost of gate guard, I couldn’t tell you. - However I do know that they had to tow the Comet across the sports field to get it into place and it took them two days:PDT_Xtremez_21:

...and its on the Deputy Guard Commanders Inventory :PDT_Xtremez_35: (Honestly...who is going to nick it???):PDT_Xtremez_14:

As for a Herc' in a UK museum well you could have some but you can’t get them out of Cambridge 'cos they are operationally paused!!!:PDT_Xtremez_31
