Greetings to you all, that is if anyone actually responds to this.

I am a former Rock Ape (left in 84) who still has a love of the RAF and anything to do with aviation (PPL with various ratings and stuff) BUT more important than that, I have just deposited my beloved son into the hands of the Royal Air Force where he wants to fulfil his dream of hanging out the back of helicopters as a WSOp.

He is at Halton and told me last night on the phone that he is having a greattime but of course,as most of us will know he will be missing contact with the outside world!

So I thought I'd have a little fun and I thought I would do it for charity. :PDT_Xtremez_15:

What I'm going to do is a daily brief update (well - as often as I can but I'll aim for daily) of his training based on the news he gives his mum, sister and me which will hopefully give some insight to newbies and the like. Actually, for those of us who know the training regime, it should also produce a laugh (by the way I know I am still covered by the official secrets act so I'll not give away any state secrets!) of reminiscence!

Here's the fun bit - I dont think my lad will notice that I am on this site for ages and he'll not forgive me for being (a) first and (b) sufficiently computer literate (at the grand old age of 50 ish) to be able to do this without his help!

So - and this is for the E-Goat 2008 Charity - I will donate 50p for every sensible reply I get to this thread up to the end of June, or he discovers the thread (and he'll know it's me from the ident) as well as 50p for every day that my lad FAILS to notice that this is all about him - again up to the end of June - and then I'll tell him!

By my reckoning, if I get right to the end of June without him knowing I could be in for £160 and if I get 100 replies, I could be in for another £50 - or more! I dont care how much I give to the worthwhile charity (up to a point I s'pose I ought to cap it at say £500 all up) as I 'm saving a fortune at home while the RAF are covering off his washing and cleaning costs!

So come on you lot - get some inside knowledge on the training of a WSOp from the perspective of the family left behind, help the site raise some charity dosh and help me get one over on my lad AND reduce his inheritance a little!!!

Let the sport commence!

An excellent first post and an admirable one as well. Welcome to the Goat and I think you may be skint quick time. Wish you're lad all the best on his training and look forward to the blog. I will see you in the Rockape forum.

Per Ardua.

And I thought teenaged sons were supposed to embarrass their parents, not the other way around!!

Oh well, you can take the man out of the RAF Reg . . .

Welcome on board.

As a scaly brat myself I was on the receiving side of the same treatment from my old man. The old bu99er seemed to know every WO of every unit I went to.

How many times did I get a tanoy message that "Daddy" was on the phone, ouch!!

Hope your boy does well and that your wallet gets lighter by the day!!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Welcome to the goat, it will be interesting to see how the new lot get trained.

Also we need as many replies as possible to drain an ex rock of as much money as we can

OK, and this is a sensible reply remember, I can see a problem here. Recalling the amount of communication I had with my parents whilst in training I believe a daily (or even weekly) update to be highly optimistic :PDT_Xtremez_15:

I used to remember waiting to get to the phone with a couple of 10p pieces in hand, but that was when I remembered to call..

You didn't have a mobile phone when you joined up. In fact, I think semaphore was a "new idea" that "would never catch on". :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Borderline, but still mostly sensible. Yup, 50p please oldnick!!

Welcome to the goat ! Congratulations on a great idea to give coverage of recruit training, whilst giving some money to 'charity mate'. This thread could prove be an interesting slant from a parents point of view.

On another note, do Airman Aircrew do recruit training at Halton now ? or is it just for initial issue prior to Cranwell ?

'ow do. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Hope the young 'un gets on well as self loading freight, or a dope on a rope if he ends up on SAR. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

Pretty certain you are going to be rooked! But it is all for a good cause.
Looking forward to reading the updates

Welcome theoldnick - ace post mate, really good idea!

Best of luck to the yoof too, I hope he's successful. Any Growbag whose dad knows how the real Air Force works (and will know doubt remind them constantly), is bound to do well & keep his feet firmly on the ground (apart from when he's hanging out the back of a chopper, obviously...)

:PDT_Xtremez_30:

ps - That'll be arf a quid please... :PDT_Xtremez_28:

A generous gesture and funny to boot 'theoldnick'...

If you PM me or any MOD you wish with the post numbers (top right of each post preceded by a #) we'll/I'll amend the post with a red 50p next to it so people can see what posts are worthy and also it offers a loose progress report...

If i remember correctly from my time as a floor buffer at Swinderby the amount of access we had to computers was extremely limited (but then I'm not sure the internet was as widely used back then either), and when time off was to be had it was spent in the nearest drinking establishment :PDT_Xtremez_28: With this in mind I think it might be some time indeed before your mini-growbag notices that he has a thread all to his own.

Great idea and I'm sure the 50p's will come rolling in, with or without Britannia ::/: I'm sure the charity won't mind.
