Even though it took my ages to download that clip to watch (sorry I'm too pikey for broadband!) it was well worth it!

I joined up too late to get a chance to work on them, however everytime I see a clip of her flying it takes me back to my yoof at airshows.

Absolutely marvelous, can't wait to see her in the skies above the midlands in a few weeks (hopefully).

Marvelous indeed, there are three types of fixed wing aircraft noise that I can recognise at once....

1- Anything fitted with a Merlin Engine...
2- Avon in a Hunter at Flight idle...
3- The aircraft below spooling up to full power on its take off run, which I heard and saw for the first time in nearly 16 years at mid day today. Take off, a left hand curcuit and a down wind flypast...Damm the Lorry Driver who blocked my view of the final run from which this photo was taken.

Question, (this may sound daft)

She is no longer an RAF jet, right? Why is the tail number XH558 displayed? I seem to recall the tail number is now G-VLCN (or similar)??

I think there are exceptions for historic aircraft.
I'm sure I'll be corrected if not.:PDT_Xtremez_31:

Flew over Waddo today...nice to see.

I wonder what sort of display they'll do with it as straight and level flypasts may get a little dull....

There is an exception for historic ex-military aircraft to keep the Military Markings and Serials, The Civil Serial (G-VLCN) does however have to be displayed, though there is no minimum size or location where it has to be placed. On a couple of Civil Spitfires the CAA Serial is very small and right under the Tailplane.

Thanks for that, Mainjafad.

A fellow egoater sent me a quick clip of it going over waddington. Absolutlely cool. Mind you every day i travel to work by train i go past another retired vulcan . I mush prefer them, in the skies.

Get it posted then.....come on...

Crack on......................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Another question. How does the pilot get qualified to fly the Vulcan after the most recent flight was in 1992? Surely training flights are too risky when the aeroplane in question is the only one in existence??

Genuine question, before anyone asks!

I think they did a lot of work in the 10 sim at BZN...

The same way it was done when the Vulcan was new, it’s flown by a qualified test pilot (in the case of 558 on its first flight), Al McDicken (who had flown the Vulcan and was involved in the Vulcan K2 tanker conversion test program in 82). The other two crew on the first flight were on the last crew to fly 558 in 1992 (David Thomas and Barry Masefield). Names from Here. The other pilot on the team is an ex Vulcan QFI as well as having actually been the captain of the first Vulcan to drop bombs in anger, I'll let you work out who he is.

Fantastic pics MJ..........Just hope I get to see her "in the flesh" and in the air again very soon.

Crack on..............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

P.S. Only one thing would make it complete......a Lightning flying alongside !!

Not what you asked for Tashy_Man but here's a striking photo of a Lightning!

We can call it "Modern Britain's Defence Strategies!"

You can probably name the base.

Now JB you are gonna get me blubbering.......If it wasn't such a sad picture it would be a great picture..........I do like it though.........Been a while since i been anywhere near but Binbrook perchance ?

Is there any chance of getting a copy of the original in full res ? (just for personal use obviously)

I was talking to a guy I know who's a civil aerospace inspector, and the only way he could see that happening was if Mike Beachyhead tried to fly one of his up from South Africa and took the CAA to court if they tried to stop him. UK Lightning with CAA permit to fly, will never happen.

The rest of the photos.
