Airman Chip Hats...

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
The only people from my POV who speak out against them are the barrack room lawyers, robbed of anything interesting to say after having RAFG shut down on them well over a decade ago...

Indeed, and they do slip rather more conveniently than is necessary by coincidence alone, into the calf pocket of a flying suit.

Ive just had a quick look for these on ebay, by Great Odin's raven, they are expensive, all around £55.

That's why you go to the tailors Pie, they are about half that, if not less.

What about wearing one OOA, that would p1ss a few people off....It would certainly p1ss off a few of the Hat Polizei at a few OOA locations....

More reason to do it then I say... after all... I've seen a few Army zobs walking about in greens wearing them and I'm sure I've seen an airship or two in my time wearing them with greens - so precident set I think....... :PDT_Xtremez_14:

This is very true. It is rare that anyone finds themselves comfortable enough with their own sartorial individuality to wear an SD hat and No 2 shoes with greens and an NBC suit until they attain the rank of Chief Tech.
I have actually seen this, on my first proper station guard (after trade training), augmentation force at Honington (when there were aircraft there) my guard commander, incidently he was also my sergeant in the leckie bay, turned up in his greens with a chipbag and DMS shoes... Brilliant. He never made it to chief, but when I did I went out and got a new beret to wear with my greens and have diliberately not shaped it as I think a Chief with a helipad beret is every bit as traditional as RAF Regt sewing creases in to their OD trousers (rememebr them?) and aircrew (air stewards included) wearing flying suits everywhere.DFandproud

But how do you wear the things? :PDT_Xtremez_35:
Brilliant Pic on the left! I'd wear one without a problem if it were issued. I'm just tight. Followed a Sqn Ldr for about 1/2 mile last week with his on backwards (2x Gold buttons at the back gave it away!). Oh for the SWO to pass by!

We had a SAC at a secret northern golfing base who used to wear one whilst riding into work on his scooter... I'm still unsure which looked the more ridiculous :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Cooheed, do you need a hug son? The SAC in question is a fine upstanding Steward and also sports clippy shoes and a stable belt - so smart I could almost have him in my PSF!

I think the issue with chip hats is not so much in the hats themselves, more the person that is wearing it. Quite often (not all the time) they can be a jobs-worth type people. I appreciate that there are many like this that wear berets too, but I have to say I would tend to associate a chip hat with a certain type of person.

Of course I understand the thought process about growbags and the fact they fold, but to be honest a well weathered beret fits in to a pocket just fine. Would I pay for one? No way! If it was free would I wear it? Yeah I think so.

Almost KG??? Come on then, what's missing? :PDT_Xtremez_31:

I wore one for most of my career and I'm sure my ex-colleagues would testify that I wasn't in work for long enough to be jobsworth about anything! The did fit into a knee pocket a bit flatter than a rolled up beret but as I always favoured the 'A' type (no knee pockets...just the ankle ones) it wasn't an issue...It was just more comfortable and made me look marginally less of a tw@t as I was definately too lazy to ever shape a beret as anyone who did CCS with me would know.
