As his most recent CO, I consider it to be my very sad duty to announce that Nick Lock died this morning after losing his courageous fight against cancer.
PPRuNers will be aware of the concerted effort to raise money for his treatment, after he was refused treatment by the NHS. The subsequent effort was testament to the high regard with which Nick was held and raised over £20 000, enabling Nick to start the treatment last Monday, 23 July. Sadly, it seems that the cancer had already taken its toll. Nick fell ill on Wednesday and returned to hospital but he deteriorated over the weekend and last night. I spoke with his mother, Sherrill, this morning and she described how Nick fought bravely throughout the night but finally passed away at about 0930.
Mrs Lock wanted to pass on the thanks of Nick’s family to all those that supported him; starting the treatment had at least removed from their mind the doubt that would have forever persisted if he had been denied the opportunity. Nick had already expressed a wish that any remaining funds should be donated to Cancer Research, the wards at Newton Abbott that had cared for him, and Children in Need.
Nick will be remembered as an incredibly enthusiastic young airman who was always great fun to be around and fiercely loyal to his Squadron. His determination and fighting spirit are an example to us all.
Rest in peace Nick.
John Sullivan
This is Nick's Mates signing off.
