A new way to help ?

A new way to help ?

It started with this:-
A bunch of gamers have untangled the structure of a key protein in the virus that causes AIDS, a mystery that has left scientists stumped for decades.

It took just three weeks for players of on-line game Foldit to predict an accurate model for the protein – a type of enzyme called a retro-viral protease that has a critical role in how the HI virus grows and spreads.

(See http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09/19/gamers_crack_structure_of_aids_protein_in_three_weeks/
for full details).

So I had a look to see what it was about. Sure enough there really IS something for the "occasional" user to employ in the quest to help:-

http://fold.it/portal/

So those goaters who like gaming but not the idea of leaving the PC on can now devote a few brain-wrangling minutes/ hours to helping.

Good Luck

I just had a quick check of how we are doing.

2384 of 206522

NICE!

And i haven't done any for a while so slap on the wrist for me, must try harder

Do we have an e-goat group for Fold.it ????

As there seems to be nothing happening on the folding front, i thought i'd resurrect this here old thread to see if any of the new members fancied adding their CPU's to the E-Goat folding cause, i haven't done any for a long time but will be getting back on the with the folding.

Just signed up, might as well make some use of the runtime other than bimbling about on the net!

Folding@Home

Folding@Home

I must admit, I've had this going for quite a while and watched the numbers dwindle. On e-goat there are now, with O'Rly starting up again, just 4 active accounts out of 65 registered. I wouldn't mind but it is totally automatic once installed and doesn't really take away any speed whatsoever.

Worthwhile cause as well.

I've had two (sometimes 3) computers doing it for a couple of years, now, including a very sluggish PC at the local spacies and my alternate unit in the back bedroom. I seldom turn off my computers except to upgrade or something.

So come on lads & lasses all, please let your machine devote a little of it's work to help this worthy project.

I used to do this. However, on a six your old laptop running XP I started to find it a bit of a load. Perhaps I will look into it again and try to finesse the settings.

I think we should give this folding thing another push.

A near year since and - nothing.
There are just 6 (six) listed by Stamford as the team (and just short of 3.5 million points, whatever that means). LINKY

I've just put my 'new' second machine on it for when I'm not using it.

So, Come you chaps (and chapesses), it costs little to help, eh ?

Edzar nudged me earlier about this...

Anyone else still folding..?

I've got it running in the background on my old PC still... Those of you new to The Goat who fancy helping out, why not sign up to the E-Goat folding team?

Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously thought.

Dosnload the software here: http://folding.stanford.edu

Team number = 54234

After install you just enter the team number and your away.

NOTE : If you own a Playstation 3 you can also get in on the action. Folding at Home is built into your console so get crunching for a good cause.

Just installed the client on my new PC after several years of not doing it... should be running all day every day now.

Quad Core i7 4790K @ 4GHz and a 4 GB GTX 770 should woek better than the machine that I used to have running it.

Just joined the team.

I was having a look recently on F@H site and it appears they've stopped supporting the PS3 application now.
I've had my PS3 for a couple of years now and was unaware they had something on there and when I had a look through it I can't find anything relating to Folding @ Home on my PS3.

Can anyone else shed any light on it or has it been removed from PS3 right enough?

I'm pleased to see more activity on F@H.

Still Folding@ and Glad!

Still Folding@ and Glad!

Still going me - managed to get to the top of our tree - wondered if anyone else was still going....

I had forgotten about this. It's been a while since my last system rebuild, so I've just downloaded the software again.

I'm having difficulty with the latest version: On both XP and 7.
I got the installer but after a while of flashing lights - Zip!
Cannot get to tell it what or when, let alone the Team Number.

Am I missing something ?

Sorry Ex-Bay, downloaded from the link yesterday and used Team number = 54234, it's all running fine under Windows 10. No idea what's stopping it running for you.

I cannot even get as far as inputting the Team Number !
That said, I cannot get Google Earth to get in, either.
