Email your MP - Social Housing for Ex Servicemen

mumof4, Please contact your MP tomorrow via email or written letter. I would also sugest you telephone him/ her up at the house of commons. If this fails to move your priority forward then please PM me and I will try and get your case coverage via the National Papers. It's very important that you don't give in! but continue to press your personnel plight upon those in power.

I will check this thread tomorrow to see if you have managed to get any answers.

All the very best in your plight and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Regards

Sorry hun, just checked this thread.I will contact them tomorrow to find out what if anything can be done and as to why i come under different rules.

May I suggest you dont ask your MP but tell your MP what help you need. If your Minister is Labour don't allow him/ her to escape from upsetting the status quo of their Party.

I mean what I said in the last couple of posts, if your Minister fails to act, then PM me and I will pass your plight onto two National Papers. I have managed to network some great reporters.

Yes she does intend to table a revised version of the EDM - and will do so soon - we are still working on the text, so that we can maximise the number of MPs who will sign up to it.

As soon as the final text is confirmed, you will be the 1st to know.

Hope you are well.

Any questions then please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.

This is an update on the Homelessness Legislation. I have been informed via an email from the AFF, that the legislation will not be amended in the near future.

I believe the Government will hold onto this amendment until the next general election. The amendment is a leverage tool towards more votes in the future from forces personnel and their families!

Damn fine idea sir. I left in 2000 and was offered ........ A BED IN A HOSTEL. my local authority accomodation grade was lower than a prisoner out on parole. But to be fair I wasnt a single mum, I'm not an ethnic minority and I wasnt pregnant ...... although quite a few bosses had tried shafting me OOER!

This is the latest update I've had from the HoC. I hope the news they bring is good news.

Hi hitback,

I hope you are well.

I just wanted to let you know that I hope we will have something to send to you very soon!

Unfortunately, it took a while, as things do in politics, but I hope we will have something constructive that you might find reflects some of the things we spoke about.

I will send you a copy as soon as it is ready.

All the best,

I got the following email today, I have removed one area as I believe it to protect the individuals identity. The PDF I got with this email is 35 pages long and I have no idea on how to place a link on here. I will forward the email onto the BAFF and RBL.

Hi Hitback,

Please see attached the paper we have written that, I hope, outlines quite a comprehensive position on welfare from the Liberal Democrats. I know it cannot include everything, but hope it provides a constructive approach to the issues we feel urgently need addressing.

We have also released it to the press, hence why I was unable to send it until today. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxx but there will be a debate in the House on Wednesday on the military covenant. The press release is also below.

I would be interested to know your response. We will be continuing to press these issues in both Houses.

Thank you again for all your help,

All the best,

XXXXXxx

Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence Secretary and North Devon MP Nick Harvey today [Monday] called on the Government to renew the Military Covenant as the Liberal Democrats launch ‘Our Nation’s Duty’, an action plan for improving the welfare of our Armed Forces.

Our Nation’s Duty calls for:

A Cross-Party Military Covenant Committee to be charged with conducting an annual review of the state of the military covenant and provide credible recommendations drawing on the expertise and experience of its members.
An assurance from all parties that the Armed Forces will not intervene without the guarantee that they will have the necessary resources, manpower and equipment that ensures our personnel are secure in the commitment
A written military covenant for all three services which gives real entitlements and holds the government to account on these and a new strategic defence review which puts personnel issues at its centre
Ring-fenced budget on welfare and accommodation within the Defence Budget
More special military-only wards to help injured personnel to recover and also ease transition to civilian life
Appropriate medical care and counselling for troops returning from service
All service accommodation to be upgraded as quickly as possible and assessed at the highest standard according to the Army’s Standard for Conditions

Commenting Nick Harvey MP said:

“It should not be for our Armed Forces to have to lobby the Government for change. We have a duty of care to all our servicemen and women who show bravery and courage in adversity and risk the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

So far they have been failed by successive Governments who have not met their obligations and are to blame for poor quality accommodation, inadequate care, and critical overstretch.

In our paper we propose positive efforts to honour the covenant and rectify these shortfalls.

Surely this is the least our Forces deserve.”

Notes to Editors:

The Liberal Democrats will also be forcing a debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

As always, I applaud your tenacity and drive on this issue Hitback :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Gosh - a reply. . . .

Gosh - a reply. . . .

I got the following reply from my MP:-

I cannot sign the Early Day Motion because of my unpaid position as a PPS at the department for Transport. However, I will take up the matter with Ministers. The Regulations relating to housing priority and local connection were changed recently to give a higher priority for ex-Armed Forces applicants. As regards the No. 10 petitions, I do not know personally how to place a petition there, but I think it is straightforward because another constituent already has a petition there.
Regards,

Well, at least mine didn't chuck it out with the bathwater. . . .

The following link is on the BAFF site. It explains the Housing issue in detail and shows the support they have given to this issue. A big thank you for all their support on this campaign. Members of this site as well as other sites have shown great support for this campaign. I hope you will be willing to show as much support for the other campaign. Medical Discharge / War Pension Ideas.

Once again thank you.

Clause 270 - Armed forces: homelessness and allocation of housing

775. Clause 270 amends section 199 of the Housing Act 1996, which sets out the circumstances when a person has a local connection with the district of a local housing authority. Housing authorities may take account of whether a person has a local connection with their district when considering the person's priority for an allocation of housing under Part 6 of the 1996 Act or when making inquiries about whether the person is homeless and owed a duty for the purposes of Part 7 of the 1996 Act. The effect of the amendment is that a person in the armed forces will now be able to establish a local connection with a district through residence of choice or employment there, in the same way as a civilian.

I had 2 letters from my local MP assuring me that its one of his top priorities and he was striving to work with all parties on the issue.
I was quite impressed to be honest. I just expected an automated email.

I hope you will write to your MP again about Medical Discharge's and War Pensions Ideas. The link is in current affairs on this site. I will be working on a generated letter format soon.

I am not sure when the Government intend to introduce this amendment but if you are getting out of the forces soon, then I would suggest you take a copy of the amendment above with you to the Housing Association / Council officers. If they ignore it contact your MP at his Local Offices or at Parliament. I would be more than happy to get their phone number or location of your MP for you, just PM me.

It would also help if people that have been turned down were to enter a short or long version of what their HA or District Council said to them.

unfortunately, this amendment will not apply to me, even though i am treated as if it were i in the forces, even though i have lived in this quarter for 10 months, it does not give me a local connection to the area.

I still keep being told conflicting things in regards to what rules i come under.According to the council, i am not a priority,i have no points, and i do not have a local connection and they do not have to rehouse me, according to the housing officer, i am homeless, according to shelter, i am not homeless untill i have a 28 day notice to quit.

Right now, no one will do anything untill i have a 28 day notice to vacate from the courts.
