Its a mixture.
Whenever England take to the pitch at this level they come up against players who either have more skill and intelligence than they have, or who are better drilled and organised than they are, or a mixture of both. The more skillful players run rings around ours whilst the better organised teams, with players not necessarily as 'good' as ours squeeze, frustrate and out-think us. The end result is what we've seen in S Africa, performances that lack the guile or subtelty to break down stubborn opponents and the skill to out play better ones. England, alongside France, have stunk this world cup out.
Looking at Capello, he was supposed to be a no-nonsense sensible and pragmatic manager, not one to be sentimental or take risks. So what does he do? Takes Ledley King who doesn't train fully for Spurs as a kingpin central defender and leaves behind Walcott, who destroyed Croatia on his own in the qualifiers, because he didn't do what Fabio wanted him to in a warm-up game. He plays his captain and best midfield player out of position on the left leaving Rooney isolated and feeding on scraps up front.
And yes, the media go absolutely mental whenever England are playing in a major championship. Never mind our Welsh and Scots friends, even I got sick of the Terry Venables advert, the newspapers taking three or four pages to cover the expectations of game we haven't played yet, the Sun with its predictable jingoistic headlines, the supermarkets with England flags attached to offers on ale, pizzas and just about any other tat to boot, the constant visits to the England camp to check up on the progress of Rooneys little toe, etc etc etc.
Put it all together and we get a country that works itself up into a lather over players and a manager who ultimately will let them down.
As a veteran of numerous world cups and Euro champs I used to get bothered by these ignominious exits. Can't be bothered now.
