Avionics - I would explain, but you probably would not understand.

I have heard of such a thing as you display, it's a valve is it not?
Too ancient for me!!!

Don't make a big thing of it. The youngsters will think we are pervs.

Those were the days, when fault finding consisted of a wet finger testing which valve was hot or cold.

BITE is for benders.

I thought this was fairy porn, and correct me if I'm wrong, but TG3 doesn't equate to being a fairy.

I see your point. But actually, the TG5 boys (heavies) always refered to TG3 AD`s as Fairies. And L Tech ST was moved from TG3 to TG2

Hope this helps ...

True, true.

It was, as in my thread off topic. I thought it wise not to open a whole new thread.

My dear 'ol Dad gave me the Megger.

The radios were garden shed rescues and are classic early 1950's models. The one on the right is a Portadyne Princess, simple T.R.F. receiver. On the left is a Marconi T25DA, superhetrodyne, 'kitchen model' hence the cream paint job. Both were total wrecks but complete and undamaged. After a few hours work and electronic jiggery pokery they are now fully functional, long and medium wave only, and must be worth all of £5 each. I've got the circuit diagrams if you want see what they look like without any clothes on. Out of shot is a Pilot 'Little Maestro Mk II' which is next on the bench and it's going to be a right fekker 'cos the valve heater supply is gone. Pilot used a flexible resistor in the supply cord as a way to drop H.T. down to 6 volts. It was known as a 'curtain burner'; very non H&S!!

Sure it was HT?. I had one of those "universal" radios in '57 and the resistive cord got hot!, dropping 220v to 110 for the HT (I think).
Practical Wireless (when it WAS practical) had an article where the guy had a 110v mains lamp as the dropper, so he could see it all.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain. The map I've got shows 200-250v coming in and going through a long 'unspecified' resistor (the cord?)to the heaters (all in series- 5 valves so I suppose I should have said 30 volts) whilst elsewhere it goes straight onto the various valves. It didn't help that the backboard was toasted and any model numbers had long since sizzled away. I'm going on valve sets/types and fuzzy photographs. All the capacitors are just brown, sticky lumps and the wiring is hard cotton covered. But hey that's the fun of it. Hmmm ... not really fairy porn is it?

Sounds to me like it's a DC supply set, not AC/DC, unless you can find a rectifier (Silicon, contact cooled?).
Oh the fun of it all . . . . .

A little more investigation has revealed that this baby is a bit older than I thought. Circa 1945 actually and cost an eye-watering £14-8-7! The valve line up is given as 6K8G, 6K7G, 6Q7G, 6V6GT and 25Z4 which more or less corresponds to mine, only the rectifier is different so I'll have to chase the 'equivalents'. It states in the general description blurb that Model 2 is post-war with mains 200-250v AC or DC. I reckon I'll be in time for the great analogue switch off by the time I've got this thing running.

Don't apologise chaps, my TG3 BTEC 111 clearly states that I am qualified in Aerospace Studies - Avionics,
consequently TG3 = Fairy.
Stand up proud lads. :PDT_Xtremez_28:
