Just watching the Falklands prog on telly and there was one of the soldiers in London for the parade wearing 2 medals on the left side (as normal) but he also had 2 medals on his right.

Whats the deal with that, is it a relations, ie Fathers medals he's wearing?

cheers

yeh immediate family (father,brothers... etc) i believe you can wear on the right hand side in uniform. if its your grandads medals then you can wear it on the right hand side but only in civvies.

Did anyone notice the fact that Prince Andrew & some other high ranking officer could not carry out the basic movement of being able to march in step?

It must be hard to do that by yourself without a servant/aide de camp to help!!!

No officers can march in step. They lose all co-ordination following the frontal lobotomy in the last week of Cranwell/Dartmouth/Sandhurst. :PDT_Xtremez_34:

Watching any of those officers trying to march was funny at least however, Andrew was doing a better job than the guy next to him who managed to get out of step every fouth go plus was late with his salute.

What was all that gumpf about the Sea Harrier the commentator was spouting? "The reason the Sea Harrier isn't taking part in todays fly past is it is a single engined aircraft & therefore unreliable, they don't want one crashing over London" or words to that effect................Where on earth do they get these people & facts?

I have just sat and watched the Falklands 25th and it has really annoyed me that everytime it was the RAF`s turn to have the cameras on them they decided to do an interview with someone else. I was really looking forward to seeing them as my hubby is marching today and also as a serving member of the RAF I wanted to be proud of seeing our guys and girls doing something which is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. Instead we get Prince Andrew tick tocking his way down the Mall and the ex RAF guy saying he was humiliated at being there (wrong choice of words from him). I know the Navy and Army played a bigger part in the war but the small amount of RAF who were involved played just as bigger part as every one else in my opinion and deserved a little bit more recognition than 5 seconds of footage. Sorry if its a bit of a rant but I am quite annoyed.

Did anyone see Sir Jock Stirrip's tie!!!!!!!!!!!! His Aide De Camp needs shooting letting him go on parade half out of his uniform. Sack her I say!

After a quick google, the answer is located right at the bottom of this page -> http://www.gnn.gov.uk/environment/f...040&NewsAreaID=2&NavigatedFromDepartment=True

Harriers will not take part in the flypast over London because single engine aircraft without the capability to glide in the event of an engine failure are not permitted to fly low over central London. Were they to take part, they would have to fly too high to be part of the display. Harriers will, however, take part in a flypast at Pangbourne College on 14 Jun 07 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

He didn't salute at all, did he?

Also,

How can a VC10 replace the Vulcan!? You would think Boeing or someone would stump up the cash to have the thing there, money be damned! History cost more than money

Money is not the reason with the Vulcan not taking part, from what I've heard they found problems with some of the airframe that are still being fixed and after that the aircraft has to do a short test program (10 hours or so) to get the CAA permit to fly that will allow it to be displayed in public.

one other reason might be is as far as im aware all SHAR's are now out of service and been replaced with gr9's. Can mainjafad confirm this or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Not forgetting the single engine hawks but they were the dead sparrows.:PDT_Xtremez_42:

I didn't explain what I meant correctly......

I didn't explain what I meant correctly......

I may not have come across exactly as I wanted, it was the way the commentator said that single engined aircraft (i.e the Sea Harrier) were unpredictable and that there may have been a likelihood of one crashing. More a case of not what he said but the way it was said that got me.

Well, I stood up and cheered when I saw the aircraft I had seen off this morning in the flypast.
Glad to see it made it all the way up to Londoncestershire. Now why cant they fly em for that long on a normal day without breaking it?!!:PDT_Xtremez_28:

And yes, the commentator seemed to be a book expert only..............
Not much mention of 1 (F) Sqn or Odihams chinooks, but then, I was flicking over channels now and again! I could have missed it.
I suppose as usual the RAF Harriers are Navy and the Chinooks are Army. It would appear the RAF doesnt really exist anymore!

Nice to see Maggie there but a great disappointment to see Des Browne there. Fecking idiot could take a few tips from Maggie about how to sort out the forces!

Yep, SHAR's got canned in March 2006, The reason for no Harriers in the flypast is to do with the aircraft glide angle in the case of an engine failure as far as I can make out, Not an expert on the facts and figures on glide angles on a Hawk or a Harrier, but the Hawk is most likely a better glider than a Harrier. VC-10 was in the Falklands Operation (10 Sqn), 101 Sqn was involved in the war (Vulcan), and the VC-10 took over the AAR Role from the Victor, hence thats the link (that if the VC-10 was from 101 Sqn, I've not kept up to date on the happenings at BZN on the tanker front).
