I've just come back from a nice 2 week stint in Cyprus and whilst over there I read in 'The Cyprus Lion' that on receiving their last load of oil at a lower market price than usual they almost immediately reduced the price at the pumps.

I can't see our crooked lot doing the same. Can you?

Sainsbury in Silksworth, Sunderland had it at 113.9p for unleaded on Sunday.

Oil companies say they keep fuel prices high when the price of oil drops because they have to sell the backlog of fuel bought at a more expensive price. If thats the case why do they pass on price rises almost immediately when surely they have a backlog of cheaper fuel to sell on?

I normally fill up at the Shell garage near Pontefract on the A1, cheaper than at home in Middlesbrough and at work down South. When I travelled up on Sunday it was actually 1p more expensive than last time I travelled at the beginning of the month when oil was $20 a barrel more. How the hell does that work?

Can someone explain to me why there is sometimes a vast difference in petrol prices at different garages, I mean surely they are using the same oil at the same price???

They blame that one on Transportation costs.

Asked this question last week...The bloke said they sell it for the highest price they dare to taking into consideration other prices in the area and proximity of other garages...

Less competition means higher prices. If you have a supermarket like Asda within a mile or 2 you will find the big chains lower their prices to match. I live in one of the poorest areas with the highest unemployment in the country but our fuel prices are higher than most regions, even the supermarkets are charging 122.9 a litre because they have no competition. 5 miles up the road in Boro Asda are charging 115.9 a litre. Like a previous oster said, they charge what they can get away with, no wonder they rake in billions of pounds worth of profit per quarter.

I can also see all the law suits BP are going to get hit with from this explosion/spill getting passed back down to the customer

Because they can, it comes down to catchment areas and what the prices are like in other local stations.

Transportation costs have little to do with it.

You'll also find that supermarket fuel is cheaper because it doesn't contain as many additives.
For example Texaco supplied fuel to a local Morrisons. My missus worked in the Texaco and was told that the Texaco fuel had all the good stuff in it whereas the Texaco fuel sold to Morrisons didn't.

Got to agree with that, I only buy supermarket fuel if I have to. I can get an extra 50 miles out of a tank of Shell fuel

Us diesel users can get round this by adding a small quantity of 2-stroke oil to every fill-up. Works out cheaper than premium brand diesel, cuts smoke, and improves performance and economy.

Just remember fellas over 60% of the cost is TAX,just shows how the Politicians steal money from motorists.I recently changed cars to a 1.9 diesel skoda Fabia estate. A VW with a different badge on,(based on the Polo.) On a long run I get 68 MPG,around town 50 or so.Wise up dont get taken in by snob badge on VW AUDI etc The latest model just out 1.2 diesel gets 76 mpg.
Keep smiling dont let the Bas****s grind you down

Filled up a few days ago at the BP garage in Forres. Just before the bottom line to full took 45 litres of Super Unleaded and cost £60 and i won't get 300 miles out of it. £1.30.9p a litre couldn't believe it....

It's not just the tax though. The crap exchange rate hasn't helped.

Oh, and the fact that we'll pay whatever they ask for.......:PDT_Xtremez_42:

It ain't the tax that makes the differential between locations. It's supply and demand. I'm paying £1.12. Tax is the same all over the UK.

This is why i chopped in my scooby for a 330d msport. 44 mpg on the motorway at 80 as opposed 22mpg. I reckon i could eek out almost 600 miles on a tank. Also my scooby had a 55litre tank and assuming yours is the one in your avatar its the same model. you sir have been robbed of 10 litre!
