After all the critcism of our Branch Specialisation I feel its only apt at this stage of the game to perhaps start to look at the positive aspects of this much maligned group of people. Any starters for ten please. Do not all rush as once.
Thanks.
Slim.

Whilst the humorous retorts are all very well, I think it is only fair that a positive note should be brought to bear. Surely an Ops room could only function correctly with the skill and expertise that a properly trained Ops Officer has. Try to imagine what it would be like if we had to rely on a FOM or FOA,…..errrm….

Or any old Holding Officer that happens to be around!!!! Surely not! ;)

Gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Go on I'll bite

The 1st bite then: "properly trained Ops Officer" When I was at FOTF I used to say to the training officer at FOTS 'It only takes our guys 8 weeks what yours do in 14'

2nd bite: "Try to imagine what it would be like if we had to rely on a FOM or FOA,…..errrm…" They managed in the past pretty well as I recall.

As this is a positive thread I'll say that splitting TG9 into Flt Ops and ATC was the good move. I never joined to control, it's too limiting and I'm sure that I would have made it too exciting too many times whereas the opsies world is diverse requires initiative and common sense (the latter I'm working on).

However, the way it was gone about is another story. Another 5 years and the experience will be there and the moaning will subside or refocus back to the aircrew.

Right I was going to give this thread a chance but once again YCCMA has managed to throw in his hand grenade and, yes , has made me see red.

You mention an ops room running smoothly only with the expertise of properly trained Ops Officers - Therein lies your first problem matey, the Air Force doesn't have any properly trained Ops Officers.

Secondly you make the very rash comment re. relying on FOM's and FOA's I can mention many units where aircrew will not engage with Ops Officers but would rather be dealt with by FOM's and FOA's - Waddington and Odiham to name 2.

You really had a chance with this thread to try to make a valid and constructive case but within 3 or 4 posts you have managed to make a hash of it. enough said -Rant off

OK,

Humour-hats on everybody.

An anagram of You Can Call Me Al is......

...Call me a luny, A CO......

clearly I do not have enough work to do. Shall I get me coat??

Ops Officers on Sqns !
Great Idea - Well received

Coz they take all the ****e irrellivent jobs off the SQINTOs to let them get on with intelligence, targets and mission planning.

EG:
- ATO breakouts... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- Planning Boxes
- Ops Admin

Mind you, the Ops SNCO with his team of SACs used to do all of that and never seemed to have any probs....

5 Ops Officers I work with, 3 of them can make a cracking cup of tea, where as the other two definately need more practice

FOMz- This is not acceptable, I shall have words with OC FOTS to ensure this important role is added to the Ops Officers course WIE.

Don't you find that having to explain the punch line spoils the joke? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!!! :o

Yawn, yawn.

How original. Another thread dominated by some embittered FOMs whinging about Flt Ops officers. With such wonderful support from those more experienced heads around them, it is small wonder that so many new Ops Os are struggling; especially when that support is matched by the complete absence of any interest from the (usually aircrew) senior officer. I am very glad that none of the excellent FOMs I have had the pleasure of serving with have mirrored the views displayed here.

The root of the problem with Flt Ops is that it is still new, there are doubtless the same issues over knowledge and experience with all trades/branches. Other trades seem to be better able to cope with new officers, rather than just pointing out that the new officer doesn't have the experience of a 15yr SNCO - we all know that, that's why FOMs are supposed to be there.

A good fishing spot!

A good fishing spot!

Fantastic a new pond with the same old Fish :p

Maybe a good idea would be to civilianise the Ops rooms. AVOs are doing a good job in control rooms, we could save the RAF a fortune. Disband FOTS, after all Breville having been making "Teasmaids" since the mid 70s. :D

Careful, I heard a rumour that the RN do a cut price version of that ;)
