For my most recent day away here is what I paid out.

Breakfast (PAYD) £1.49
Lunch (PAYD) £2.00 (special meal deal)
Coffee £1.00 (for all day)

Then on the way home I stopped at the services, bought a cheap wrap from KFC and a coffee (£2 odd). I also bought a bottle of water to drink on the way home (£1.50 ish)

So, in total I spent about £8.00

When at home I spend about...

Bowl of cereal (£2.00 for a box of Cornflakes... which last me a week or so...about 20p per morning...add milk lets call it another 40p on top)
Lunch (Normally a sandwich Couple of loaves of bread, box of ham, bit of cheese, margarine £5... which will make mine and the kids for a few days... call it £1 a day, plus a Yoghurt at 50p)
Evening Meal (£5.00 to make a meal for me and the family... so call it £1)
Tea and coffee (charged at £5 per month... works out at about 25 p per day)
Prices checked for the things I buy regularly at Tesco.com... other shops are available.

So... £8 whilst away
and £3.35 whilst at home

A difference of £4.65... lets just call it about a fiver? :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Back in the good old days of course a married guy on temporary duty would eat in the mess for free. Great for the married guys - not so great for the singlies who were effectively paying for us to pile our plates up. When we had IE the boot was on the other foot - married guys had an allowance which offset what they were paying for food (even though that was never its intent) while singlies were quids in for little, if any, additional expenditure. Whichever way you play it somebody is going to appear hard done by.

More to the point, food is not classed as incidental expenditure. Whether or not people on temporary duty should be able to claim their food costs is a different (albeit related) discussion.

At the end if the day, no civvy company would send staff away and expect them to pay for meals.

Exactly mate. I get full food and incidentals when away and my expenses procedure is a lot more comprehensive than the RAFs... Oh and a damn sight easier to do than on JPA. It may have something to do with fullly qualified qualified people who understand expenses running it.
