Oops!

Reversing your Landrover into a HAS door, denting it, along with 2 smashed screw-in tail lights. THEN later that night on Swing shift when the friendly RAF Police parked their identical Landrover outside, it seemed the logical thing to do. There was a perfect donor vehicle, a small kick to remove the dent and a quick switch of the lights & it was good as new. Belated apology to the poor RAF Policeman who’s career may have been blighted by the incident!
Surely that does not happen anymore?

Getting the newbie to wear full NBC kit to change a spoked refuelling basket as the lights are radio active.
Attaching spurs, bumble bees, holsters and six guns to any visiting dignatry.
Getting the lumpy jumpers to wear blue bunting Yashmaks becuase the Arabs were visiting - also that they must keep their heads lower than the Arabs.
Blacking the eye pieces on the microscope for visitors stupid enough to look down it.
Painting the toecaps of the visitor with silver paint while they viewed an item at the bench.
Telling the Senior Scientific Officer that he wasn't a scientist because he hadn't invented a death ray or matter transporter.
Filling the chiefs car with flo-pack through the sun roof!

Oh happy days......

Having a combat kip in the tyre trolley in Goose bay.

Not having thousands of crap e mails to read every ten minutes.

Having 3 guys to do a see off on a Tonca.

Having enough vehicles on det to be able to use them for R & R too, and not just the gro-bags.

The "Euro gardens" in Assimini and getting in a fight with the bouncers for being called "American"

Looking back through the door of "Smokey Joes" and seeing him putting your half eaten ice cream back in the tub!

Watching the Eyeties try to get the Italian flag to the top of the pole first out of the five to the strains of a bugle on an old beaten up ghetto blaster.

Holding the door shut on some poor B'stard when the bogs blow back from too many "Engleses" putting their paper down the bog.

Galloping out into the bondu with a blanket to catch a chit-chat to use as a fly catcher for the Det.

Having to lie face down on the deck with an Eyetie airman pointing his rifle at you because he had a sense of humour failure, because when he said "Pass" in his "English with heavy Eyetie accent" you said "No mate this isn't a BUS it's a LANDROVER"

There are many more but that's just a few for starters........

Classic!

Hitching a lift from camp to your home in uniform with RAF in orange Dayglow tape on the back of your kit bag so that ppl would pick you up...always worked

Did it mostly in civvies tho', but the kit bag gave it away!

Did many a mile like that, once tried putting Bone-dome reflective tape that i'd purloined from a squipper on too but gave it up because the I got a whole night of "Sh*t mate, sorry I nearly ran you over I couldn't see anything for the glare!!"

Best time kitbag hitching : 2hrs 35mins RAF Abingdon to Leeds City centre!

(Picked up by an ex-liney in an XR2 with a need to get to Nottingham badly and then a lunatic in an RX-7 who was late for a meeting in Leeds city centre!)

Worst time: 21 hrs 45mins RAF Lyneham to Norwich

(Got diverted in St.Neots at the age of 19 by a motherly 30yo girly who had a liking for uniforms)

Having a doggy like relationship in the garages behind the bop at Coningsby with Phsyco's (he was in Deci at the time) girlfriend. When he found out I accidently dobbed Kev ****** in for it and he took a totally undeserved kicking for it (sos mate).

Different when I was in!

Different when I was in!

I joined in 1951 after doing NS as a brown job in the RA. The RAF must have been sheer heaven if someone from todays apology for the RAF went back in time. We still had the Lincoln in 1951. There were distinct trades, Aircraft trades were Engines, airframes and electrics. Ancillery trades were Radio/Radar, Instruments and photo. There were no such things as Taceval or minival they were just named ex momentum or forestall etc. The big thing each year was "Escape and Evasion". Air crew were dumped about 20 miles from camp in buses with the windows blacked out and the ground crew had to find them and stop them getting back. If there were'nt at least six black eyes between the two groups in conflict, we were'nt doing it proper!! Oh, I almost forgot, the line mechanic was an unknown animal!

E & I Assistants.

E & I Assistants.

I almost forgot in my recent discourse. Did any of the old stagers like me
ever come up against the horrid E & I assistants. I came accross two and they were the pits! How someone with a vestige of intelligence could fail the course beats me. Does any one have any recollection of one actually passing the course at a later date?

RAF Spittlegate.

RAF Spittlegate.

Saturday nights in the NAAFI at RAF Spittlegate,Grantham, the then WRAF equivalent of RAF Swinderby. The recruits needed a pink pass to show they were 18 yrs or over as 16/17 yr old space cadets at 644 Gliding school we were never asked about age at the bar.The gratitude shown for a pint of black velvet was amazing.:PDT_Xtremez_30: :PDT_Xtremez_30: :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Was that when an LAC was in charge of two aircraft ?
When an AC/1 WAS something?
I remember my Chief talking about it.
