Hiya all,

Getting time to think of trading in the Jag.....11 years old now and just got a new puppy so need a bit more room.

What would the goaters recommend for a family of 4 with ample space for luggage and two dogs. Still would like the luxury of the Jag (looked at the x-type estates but not too drawn to them) but really don't know !

Price range up to 10K i suppose but for the right motor maybe a little more.

Looking to buy April/May so hopefully have a few ideas from yous lot by then..........:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Cheers and crack on.....................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Having run a Jag, you could afford the fuel consumption of a 4 x 4. Not suggesting a V8 or anything silly but some have bags of room. My border collie and whippet love going out in it. You also have the benefit of an elevated viewpoint.

I know Jeremy Clarkson can be a bit of a knob but he rates the Volvo XC90.

I've got an old Volvo and as ever they are solid and dependable. Over 100,000 on the clock and she runs sweetly with very few problems.

I've had a look around my mates XC90 and it has all mod cons, proper 7 seat capability (with leg room for the extra seats). Plenty of room for family and dog with added bonus that if things do take a turn for the worst you'll be cocooned in a safety cage structure with a shed load of air-bags to soften your landing.

OK, Fuel efficiency might be a bit crap and your tax will be monstrous but I'm sure you'll weigh up all the pro's and cons.

A quick look on Autotrader shows 65 available nationwide for under £10,000.

Certainly the next car on my list!

Some bargains to be had here. High miles, but serviced up to the hilt. I think they take the blue flashy light thingamajig off though. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

P.S. I was thinking along the lines of a 4x4 but never having owned one have no idea of what is around

Like Harry I have an old Volvo too, a V70 2.5 Diesel 190K on the clock. I've had it since new and its been a real trooper.

It's been so good that I bought a 57 Plate V70 with just 22K on the Clock. It was a bit pricey but still worth it at 17K. It gives 40mpg at 80 mph and has quite some power to pull a rather large rolling roadblock. Should last for some years yet.

I mainly use the new one at weekends or when most people are trying to go somewhere quick!

A mate of mine has just got a Merc C class estate, 1.8 kompressor, petrol with about 30k and under 3 years old.

Its very nice inside and from he has said the fuel economy is about the same a diesel, and its got a full merc service history.

With the merc service history providing you always get it serviced by them it covers you for brake down cover, if your rods try to escape through the head gasket through no fault of yours they will replace the engine for free etc etc.
The warranty covers the whole car except consumables ( brake discs, bads etc ) and they will even give you a gallon of fuel if you run out.

It is something I am looking at getting when I trade in my 406.

Amongst my fleet I have a 4.4i Sport V8 Beemer X5. Its as economical as fook; regularly turning in 18MPG. I have tried driving it sensibly and once managed to get it up to 22MPG on a long run but it doesn't make quite as nice a noise as it does doing 18MPG.

Being as how you are in the Oil business clearly fuel economy won't be an issue so why not just buy a big fook off planet destroyer?

Oh believe me Hu, fuel economy is not something I ever worry about !! Only being at home a maximum of 6 months a year I like to make up for the time that I am not here............Just after suggestions so I can have a good look around when I am away (next week) so I can be going for test drive/buying on my return in April.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far (that V90 looks quite smart)....keep them coming.

A bit Off Topic but I'm sure the car wasn't registered in 1957, so how does it work in UK these days?Off Topic

Skoda Octavia vRS estate.

Ignore the badge snobs. These are awesome cars, well built, solidly reliable, with excellent load space.

Not only that, but when you're on your own in it you can have some fun!

I will hazard an educated guess here + I changed my UK plates to German ones a few years back.

the 1st number can be "0" or "5" these denote the month of vehicle registration - with "0" being January and "5" hmmm I believe September.

The latter number denotes the year as in "7" for 2007 etc

Just an educated guess mind.

That Ovlov XC60 looks quite useful and well built. But to be honest you really should get a car that suits you.:PDT_Xtremez_14::PDT_Xtremez_30::PDT_Xtremez_15:

New pattern: AA09 BBB

AA= Area Code (AA=Anglia, SA = Scotland, etc)

0 = half year of mfr (01 = Jan 2001. 51 = Sept 2001) now moved to 1 & 6 (giving a “60” plate)

9= Year of mfr – (59 = Sept 2009, 60 = Feb 2010)

BBB = Random set of letters

I agree with the Skoda octavia. A 2005 4x4 version will be around 10k

But it's a Skoda !! I'm sorry but no matter how good they have become I will not own a car with that badge on it (call me a snob as much as you like)....plus the missus has (recently) said she doesn't want an estate.....so looking like it's a 4x4 or nothing :-(
