New Car Ideas please.....

Nope - they are aweful. Increadibly agricultural. I had one for a month in Canada (actually a 'Grand Cherokee') - truely horrible, and very poor four wheel drive system. I swapped it for a Chevvy Blazer - and the differerence was night and day.

Disco yes. Freeloader NO. The Freeloader does NOT have a proper 4wd system - LandRover only created this for the RAV4 owning wannabe chelsea tractor drivers. Anyway, the Freeloader is very small inside.

Nooooooooo. Horrible. If anyone honestly thinks the X5 is good, they either havn't driven anything else, or are wearing automotive Beer Goggles.

Another vastly over-hyped car - from a Japanese manufacturer who are out of their depth. Toyotas with throttles which jamb open and kill occupants. Same story with the Nuclear power station fcuk up - the Japs are out of their depth.

Different league to the rest . . . surely???

Again, different league - and not really nice places on the inside.

Probably the best of your suggestions - though still not perfect. Not a true 4wd.

I'll get my coat....

TM, in my earlier reply, I completely forgot to consider your budget. So probably the latest Disco 3 is out.

In that case, can I recommend you consider an Audi A6 allroad - dunno if you know much about them - they are basically a very large estate - but 'on stilts'. Sort of a half-way house between a conventional estate car and a full-on 4x4 SUV. Being as its an Audi, it has a very good (arguably the best in the world) permanent 4 wheel drive system (no fannying around with diff-locks and the likes). It also has height adjustable suspension (controlled from a button on the dash). Being as it looks more like a normal estate car - you wont suffer from the scurge of the 'SUV bashers'. I'd strongly recommend the 2.5 V6 TDI - superb grunt, and fairly economical. The 2.7 V6 twin-turbo petrol engine is very good, but has a serious drink problem. One final comment, the Audi is likely to meet 'expectations' of quality when compared to your current Jag - if you were say to go for a Jap 4x4, you'd be shocked by the interior quality.

Here is the issue with Audis though: Everyone hates you.

In fact, there are thousands of Audi drivers out there that I have never met, and yet loathe with a vehemance you would not believe.......

....like losing socks and growing back hair; it's not good - it's just how it is.

Agreed.
Didn't Top Gear call all Audi drivers cocks?!!

They seem to be taking over from BMW drivers who cannot park in a single bay at the supermarket.

Ha ha . . . yes, a certain outspoken denim-wearing oaf did brand Audi drivers cocks - but then he also severly slated the Vectra when it first came out - and time has proven he was well-wrong on that aspect.

Anyway, being an Audi driver myself, I do tend to agree - but the dick-head Audi drivers generally own/drive the smaller Audis such as the A3 (and particularly the S3) and A4. The bigger Audis such as the A6 and A6 havn't yet been tainted by them yet - and the 'Allroad' versions are very rare - so they probably don't even appear on the cock-ometer.

And what about the Chelsea Tractor - you're far more likely to be called far worse than a 'cock' . . . personally, if you have a genuine need for an SUV, it doesn't bother me . . .

Buy two cars..

Buy two cars..

Buy yourself a 231hp Mazda RX8 and buy the rest of the family/dogs a vauxhall combi van, cheap as chips and you get to look cool in a gas guzzling sprots car while the rest of the family are spaciously comfortable in the van behind..

Great idea only flawed by the fact that the missus don't drive and I can't drive both at once ....:PDT_Xtremez_14:

OK....update on the new car front......I decided to go for the totally unpractical Jaguar XF....found a reasonably priced Premium Luxury 3.0 Petrol version down in Derby.

Got back to the UK last monday and got train to Derby on Wednesday....drove back up (intending to stop off but there was no room at the travel-lodge) so stopped just outside aviemore in a layby for a few hours kip.......Woke at 03:05 nice and light so finished the journey home.

What a motor....lovely to drive and stacked to the max.....well happy (although the dogs ain't as they are obviously not allowed in it !)

Now is anyone in the market for a 2000 S-Type Jaguar, 97K, reasonable bodywork (a few scratches), great drive, Tax till Nov and MOT till Feb ....offers ?

Crack on......................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Hi Tashy

I'm considering switching motors, I had a brand new V6 X Type Sport a few years ago, nice enough motor but I just didn't take to it, I only managed to live with it for 6 months (4 of which I was down the Falklands) before I could stand it no more. How are you getting on with the XF ?

Maybe we should rename him, "Flashy_man"! :PDT_Xtremez_14: :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Hiya Hu,

Well currently loving the XF....it is a lot of car for the money but I do have my concerns as with working away my old S-Type seemed to deteriorate with non use during my 5 weeks away (rust on brakes etc) and just waiting to see if the same happens with the XF (hoping not). Having said that the car is great to drive compared to the S-Type (then again there is 7 years difference in age) and although I bought it more for the comfort and luxury the speed is fantastic. Also after having pure Autos for the last 7-8 years having the option to change gear with the paddles is great :PDT_Xtremez_14:

You can if you want....or maybe "Skinto Man"......(well I did pay cash) :PDT_Xtremez_42:

P.S. If anyone is in the market for a 2000 (W) S-Type Jag at a reasonable price (make me an offer) then get in touch.

Well thanks to Tashy's recommendation I have today traded in the X5 and bought a 2 year old 2.7 V6 Diesel Premium Luxury to tug my caravan - I pick it up on Friday. It's my first ever diesel so I guess I'm an eco warrior after all.:PDT_Xtremez_42:Aren't pensions great?:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Snap! Nice one Hu... congrats to both of you.... I've NEVER had a nicer car and suspect that I'm now a complete convert, even down to the Clarkson drawl any time anyone asks me what I drive....

A "Jaaaaaggg":PDT_Xtremez_30:

Brings a big cheesy grin to my face every drive!

After 2 Years driving a 4.4L V8 Petrol at 17MPG I figured maybe I should get something sensible and being a true petrol head I always figured diesels should only be German Taxis or Tractors but at 0 - 60 in under 8 seconds and an average of 38MPG I figured I should give it a go:PDT_Xtremez_18:::D:
