New Car Ideas please.....

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Hiya all,

Getting time to think of trading in the Jag.....11 years old now and just got a new puppy so need a bit more room.

What would the goaters recommend for a family of 4 with ample space for luggage and two dogs. Still would like the luxury of the Jag (looked at the x-type estates but not too drawn to them) but really don't know !

Price range up to 10K i suppose but for the right motor maybe a little more.

Looking to buy April/May so hopefully have a few ideas from yous lot by then..........:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Cheers and crack on.....................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

You will need to go a long way to find a car more suited to your needs than an Austin Maxi.

I managed 16 lineys in mine from the NAAFI bop to the Bull at Conz once:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Sadly.....very sadly in fact, I concur with GEM. Its a sofa of a drive.

Mitsubishi, but make sure the valves are clear.

OK cheers Stevienics and GEM......a Maxi it is then assuming I can still find one on the road !

GEM I assume all 16 lineys were very comfortable during said drive ? (I went in the boot of one car on the way to cleethorpes one night....best sleep I ever had)

we dro[pped the seats and packed 12 in like sardines and 3 in the front with me making 16.

The buggers walked back though:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Cheers GEM....brought back lots of childhood memories (me dad had one)....have to say not all of them good........think my dads died during the floods in cardiff sometime in the 70's.

Crack on....................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

I bought a 1750 maxi at Laarparts in '76. BFG plate was LS543B.
Seats folded down into a double bed. Just the job for popping down the Mosel for the weekend at the end of the month. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Didn't realise that they made them that long ago!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I hope no one minds me hijacking this a little but I'm also after a little car advice.

Looking at changing mine but for financial reasons so have had a very brief look at the Vauxhall Insignia, unlimited warranty sounds like it could be quite handy if I'm going to keep it for the long term (thats the plan). So after reading some mixed reviews thought I'd see if anyone actually has one and what they think of it.

So please let me know, I'd rather know what normal....ah sorry forget what forum I'm on, ermmm, ok, non-car reviewer type people think of it. Also looking at a Mondeo (although no unlimited warranty) so any thoughts on that would be welcome.

Cheers

Stuck!

Had two Mondeo hatchbacks now, 56 Plate ST TDCI and now run a Titaniuum X Sport. Brilliant cars considering I was never a fan of Ford!!! Loads of passenger and luggage space, excellent drive and good fuel economy for the 2.2ltr diesel engine. Loads of comfort, no back pain and tons of buttons to press and play with for the techies amongst us. Engines are pokey and reliable and the car itself holds the road well in all conditions, really good in the snow !!!!! Newish used fleet cars are fairly reasonably priced for a lot of car.

Some bargains to be had here. High miles, but serviced up to the hilt. I think they take the blue flashy light thingamajig off though. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Interiors are aweful though, cloth seats and holes all over the dash for where screens and switches were fitted. I've got an S60, a black D5 and its fantastic, not suitable for you with your older children and dogs though. but a V70 would do the job, and leave you lots of money left over if you get an older one (My car has 160,000 miles, is 8 years old, but will go on for a LOONG time yet.

If your not moved by the idea of a volvo how about one of these...

Any good???

Tashy,

Have you considered the Merc ML270 Diesel? They come fully loaded, do around 35mpg on a run and you could easily get everything you need in there with loads of comfort. I'm looking for one myself as I'm changing from my Honda CRV (only get 29.1mpg on a long run, although to be fair, it is only a 2.0l petrol vtec engine).

P.S. I was thinking along the lines of a 4x4 but never having owned one have no idea of what is around

If you are thinking of the 4x4 route - AVOID BMW X5s like a lady-friend who has a season ticket to her clap clinic. Despite what the Journos may bulsh!t, they are utter pants. They handle horribly, are gutless as fook, and are really quite 'jiggly' on the road. If you are looking at X5 size 4x4s, then I'd recommend either a VW Touareg (or an Audi Q7 if you are feeling flush), or a Discovery 3, or even a RangeRover Sport (which are built on a Disco chassis, and not a Rangie chassis). If they are out of your price range, then that big Hyundai 4x4 thing is quite good.

Jeep Cherokee.
Nope - they are aweful. Increadibly agricultural. I had one for a month in Canada (actually a 'Grand Cherokee') - truely horrible, and very poor four wheel drive system. I swapped it for a Chevvy Blazer - and the differerence was night and day.

Landrover Discovery or Freelander.
Disco yes. Freeloader NO. The Freeloader does NOT have a proper 4wd system - LandRover only created this for the RAV4 owning wannabe chelsea tractor drivers. Anyway, the Freeloader is very small inside.

Nooooooooo. Horrible. If anyone honestly thinks the X5 is good, they either havn't driven anything else, or are wearing automotive Beer Goggles.

Lexus RX.
Another vastly over-hyped car - from a Japanese manufacturer who are out of their depth. Toyotas with throttles which jamb open and kill occupants. Same story with the Nuclear power station fcuk up - the Japs are out of their depth.

Mitsubishi L200.
Different league to the rest . . . surely???

Any of the many Nissan 4x4's.
Again, different league - and not really nice places on the inside.

Volvo XC70 or XC90.
Probably the best of your suggestions - though still not perfect. Not a true 4wd.

Cheers HH.....funny you should mention the Disco...had a look at one the other day, also a Shogun.....think I'm going off the 4x4 option and don't really like any of the estate options either.....I can see me either getting a newer S type or waiting a few more months and getting an XF.

Choices, choices !!.......:PDT_Xtremez_09:
