Back to your point. Yes they could earn much more outside, but then they wouldnt be able to bleat as if it were their money that had been allocated to pay other trades' higher salaries.
Fact of the matter is most of those who bleat are either ex members of the RAF or too scared to take the leap that you suggest, so they continue to moan and mutter under their breath, whilst being shafted by their employer who is only too happy to keep paying half the going rate for twice the workload.
There is an Uber Pay band for TG1 & 2, but it involves leaving the Forces.
