The rules for miniatures are the same as full sized medals. They cannot be worn unless authorized. The NATO medal for Libya has not yet been authorized.

If anyone cares, the NATO Libya OUP medal has been approved for wear by the Canadian Forces. I’m sure the Canadian and UK honours systems have spoken to each other regarding the issuing of this NATO medal as the easiest solution, rather than going through the pain of adding another OSM, especially since NATO considers OUP a benchmark “success” in their books.

[h=British forces could receive Libya campaign medal]1[/h][h=British service personnel who served in the Nato mission in Libya during Colonel Gaddafi's final days could be awarded a service medal, the Ministry of Defence revealed today.]2[/h]Discussions are being held about awarding a Nato medal to thousands of servicemen and women involved in the war last year.British warships and aircraft delivered humanitarian aid as rebel forces fought to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

They also rescued refugees and enforced the United Nations' no-fly zone.

Nato is keen for its Libyan operational medal to be awarded in the UK and the MoD is holding talks about who will be eligible for the award.

It has been suggested just one day's service could suffice. But a final decision will have to be approved by the Queen this autumn.

It comes after the US Department of Defense gave its approval for a Nato medal to be worn by American personnel involved in the Libya operations.
In June medals were awarded to Nato staff at Allied Maritime Command Naples, from where the mission under
An MoD spokesman said: "There is a Nato medal and we are in the process of looking at the application for British service personnel to wear it as well.
"However, no decision has been made as of yet."
Among those in line for the medal would be sailors from HMS Liverpool, which became the first UK warship since the first Gulf War to come under enemy fire during her 207 days of patrols off the Libyan coast.
HMS Brocklesby, York, Westminster and Iron Duke - all based in Portsmouth, Hants - may also be honoured.
Nato spokesman Tony White said: "We would be thrilled if nations recognise the commitment to an operation that was in our eyes very successful and saved thousands of lives.
"The Royal Navy in particular did an outstanding job and I would go as far as to say they were the unsung heroes.
"From a humanitarian point of view, what the navy did to keep those ports open in Misrata is a story that needs to be told because that saved the country."
The former head of the navy, Admiral Lord West, said: "The general trend has been for Nato to produce a medal for operations of this kind and it would be appropriate to have a medal.
"The criteria will have to be carefully looked at but certainly ships which operated close to the coast deserve a medal."
Penny Mordaunt, Conservative MP for Portsmouth North, added: "It would be great if their contribution is recognised.
"It was a dangerous theatre and there was a great range of roles, particularly from the navy.

"It was a hell of an achievement and it would be right to mark that."

The RAF Diaspora update 11/12 reports that HM the Queen has approved the acceptance and wearing of the NATO Non-Article 5 Libya medal - no sign of a DIN yet.

Suppose it was inevitable really, the typhoon fags need something to put on thier uniforms....

Anyone know how these are being rolled out? Do we need to apply?

PJHQ calculated the number of personnel who met the standard eligibility criteria (30 days in the JOA or 8 sorties (I think it's 8 but I would need to check when back in the office)) and got hold of enough medals (2200) to distribute. I guess they are now arriving at units. Those who fell just short of the criteria but made a significant contribution to the Op are able to apply for SACEUR's exception to be awarded the medal. Unit HR staffs have been coordinating that return for the past couple of weeks.
